Anyone else just watched this on BBC one? Very emotional Christmas tale . . .

Yes meGrin
I was crying at that lovely happy ending.
BBC seem to do those lovely little films just before Christmas, I loved it.

Furball · 18/12/2011 19:47

We watched too - thought it was great

now started on Just Henry!

LetUsPrey · 18/12/2011 19:47

I sobbed. DH and DS2 came home just at the point where Milly was on the ice the first time. I was in pieces, tears streaming and they rang the bell because DS2 wanted to pretend to be a carol singer.

Thought everyone was fab, particularly Eddie Izzard.

BillyBigBaubles · 18/12/2011 19:50

I loved it!

wintera · 18/12/2011 19:53

Eddie Izzard was wonderful in it, and so was the little boy. I loved it. Love things like that, heartwarming emotional stories. I missed a bit at the beginning so am going to watch it again on Iplayer.

I was a bit thrown by the last scene when he was in the garden with the lady whose bracelet he'd taken (or not taken). Was that Goose as an adult the second time around having not been orphaned? If so how did he know her or was she part of the magic?

battherat · 18/12/2011 20:12

It was brilliant. I cried my eyes out all the way through. The characters were wonderful and the story compelling without being overly sentimental.

FreddoBaggyMac · 18/12/2011 20:19

It was lovely. Proper old fashioned Christmassy tale.

eatyourveg I got the impression the old lady was part of the magic! Goose just disappeared after he saw her because he no longer existed as aperson with such a sad past anymore.

ShowOfHands · 18/12/2011 20:19

I loved it. Felt all Christmassy and warm and more than a bit tearful.

Malificence · 18/12/2011 20:23

They should have shown it on Christmas eve!

Stilla · 18/12/2011 20:50

It was brilliant - I loved it .
Yes , it would have been great on Christmas eve

LetUsPrey · 18/12/2011 20:58

I've just been telling DH about it. I started getting all teary when I told him about Doctor Clarence finding the letter from his wife.

battherat · 18/12/2011 21:02

Oh god. The dr Clarence letter had me inconsolable. Bottom lip going at the thought of it...

lazarusinNazareth · 18/12/2011 21:21

I bought this book for dd for Christmas this year and so wanted to watch the film. It was fantastic. Great story, great acting. Hope dd loves the book.
Very emotional.

notimetotidy · 18/12/2011 23:26

My DS has just woken from a sleep and came in and asked me if Dr Clarence would still be crying? He said that Dr Clarence wouldn't find the letter because everying went back to the way it was the previous Christmas Eve. What did Dr Clarence have to do with the story? I know it had something to do with him being struck off but can't remember what and it didn't show him having a happy ending. I've already deleted it off sky+ and can't check! Anyone????

eatyourveg · 19/12/2011 07:56

Dr Clarence is the one who took the £40K copy of the happy prince by Oscar Wilde from the pub which Goose's Dad's friend had left there. Nothing to do with why he was struck off as far as I remember.

PiratecatClaus · 19/12/2011 08:00

I cried at the end. dd was wondering, and i said, it's just because it's Christmas, and it's a little girl thing, and you're my little girl. Sad Smile

PiratecatClaus · 19/12/2011 08:03

ooh thats true, poor old Dr Clarence won't find the letter now.

laineylou · 19/12/2011 08:09

And just to be a right ol grinch....does that mean that Anthony freezes to death under the arches cos Eddie Izzard now isn't around to give him his coat? And what if Milly turns out to be a psycho who slaughters her class mates in a Columbine style massacre - maybe... Xmas Grin
Although to be fair I thought it was sweet - and I'll happily watch Eddie in pretty much anything.

OrwellianNightmare · 19/12/2011 20:01

Thankfully I think there was enough magic around those good people of Manchester that Dr Clarence still has his letter, and Uncle whatsisname still gets his 40k from Oscar Wilde and Anthony probably ends up being employed by Goose's Dad or something no never loses his job and thus freezes to death.
Magic, innit!

Gorgeous little drama anyway, I was sobbing at the end. I also feel like helping the homeless this Christmas - I know those arches in Manchester, and this winter they will indeed be full of people sleeping under the snow.

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/12/2011 20:07

i really enjoyed this too! thought Eddie Izzard was brilliant - he seems to have grown into himself as an actor.

twas all lovely and fuzzy.

ChocolatEtVin · 19/12/2011 22:22

I watched this with the DC after putting up the christmas tree. I weeped the whole way through it, they didn't even bat an eyelid! Hard as nails they are :o

Iwantacampervan · 20/12/2011 07:47

It's repeated on Christmas Eve, 5.30pm CBBC. I was cooking so i watched it in parts and would love to see it again to piece it all together.

LordOfTheFlies · 20/12/2011 18:29

Aaaaaww watched it today on catch-up (well when I say 'watched it', I was in the kitchen so missed some.

It was sad, heart breaking, glow-inside happy. Just perfect for Christmas. With just the suggestion of a ghost story!

LadyBeagleBaublesAndBells · 20/12/2011 20:14

Oh, I'm pleased it's repeated, I'd like to watch it again.
It's very Christmas Evie and I know it's got a happy ending now!
