HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 25/11/2011 06:55

missed it. sounds interesting. I think I will check it out on i-player

you're going to get your arse handed to you if you refer to a group of women (and men) ranging in age from the teen to the 60+ as 'girls' Grin

So glad I caught your attention. I am 60 now and my son is 31. I have been watching programmes made by David Attenborough all of my life. I watched it again this morning.

In 1976 before I met my husband and had my son I was living in Greater Manchester in Rawtenstall. That area was renowned for always raining which it did all time. But the Summer of l976 was quite hot. I remember we went swimming in one of the reservoirs and then a couple of weeks later it was completely dry. There was a massive drought. And we had to have water supplied from stand pipes. We had to go outside and collect water in buckets.

Once when my boyfriend was driving me home on his motor bike I remember that there were fires on either side of the motorway.

I wonder if any of you older folks remember the Summer of 1976. Its really not that long ago within the scheme of things.

I suggest you check that programme out as soon as possible before it goes off air.

I remember the summer of 1976, I was 12 going on 13 in the October and remember doing a sponsored walk with school along the canals around Dunham Massey, nr Altrincham for the WWF (for the pandas and wildlife, not the wrestling as it can stand for these days!) My whole form did it and most of us got sunburnt but it was really great.

The only other summer of note that I can recall, you know long and hot, was 1984, sitting in Wythenshawe Park and with Long Hot Summer from Style Council ringing in my ears (but still love that song today as does my 10 year old son!)

Unfortunately these days I prefer Autumn and Winter because I like the cosy frost and snow and keeping warm indoors and candles. Mostly summers are just too wet to be enjoyable and find myself looking forward to October!

Anyway thanks for letting me reminisce! Being 48 and a stepnanna I am also a member of Granset but rarely post on either really!

Robins · 25/11/2011 09:34

PS I love watching Attenborough but am mostly drawn to the ones with snow!

LancsLassie · 25/11/2011 10:12

I watched this programme 3 times now. Once last night and twice this morning. Like you folks I've been aware of climate change for a while. I'm also aware through personal experience that governments don't tell you everything. I suggest also you check out psychiatrist Dr.Peter Breggin and his wife Ginger in New York. [email protected] and [email protected] And read Mary Maddock's book Soul Survivor. I also stress you watch this programme for yourselves. Because, what David Attenborough is saying to us basically is that our Planet is Dying.

I've drawn your attention to it. It's up to all of you now. I don't know how long David's programme will be aired.

I was 25 years old in 1976 and living with by boyfriend. I was a young housewife basically even though I had no children then.

If you have a computer available there with you at the moment then watch it for yorselves. Ane note the UK alone uses 5.33 Global Hectars. This is our children's and grandchildren's future at stake here.

I remember 1976, I was at secondary school and bunking off due to it being too hot and "having" to go to the open air pool with mates.

That was the year I also got sunstroke Sad

Robins · 25/11/2011 10:38

Sorry I didn't take this post seriously enough, didn't know it was that type of post! However, I am aware of the disappearing ice caps and cried a few years ago watching the polar bears. To put it in simple terms, the planet is just "too full" and the human race so greedy and materialistic, that is what it all boils down to really. Recycling domestic waste is extremely important, manufacturers certainly need to reduce fancy packaging, you know like cardboard on Easter eggs and on many childrens toys, and there should be schemes whereby you can take empty coffee jars, fabric conditioner bottles etc to shops to fill up again. I really wish someone would take that one on board! I don't have the money or the business acumen!

Yes, the planet is groaning with the weight!

bruffin · 25/11/2011 10:39

I was nearly 14 and spent the summer in Monmouth with my GP. We spent every afternoon at the Haberdashers school swimming pool as my aunty worked there. I remember the dead fish in the River Wye as the river was so low.

Robins · 25/11/2011 10:42

Good memories and bad I suppose but all part of life's rich tapestry!

LancsLassie · 25/11/2011 11:32

I'm so glad to know you have all got sweet memories of good Summers. But there so much more you don't seem to be appreciating. If we don't and especially the UK start to take drastic measures personally and within our government then we are going to be responsible for Killing our Planet and along with it our children and potential future generations of children.

I strongly suggest you start taking this seriously and watch this programme while it is still being aired. Because the reality is that your children will not have a future to talk about even though you guys are remembering sweet Summers your children won't have that

There is so much we can do personally as a naiton. And I have already started in my own small way to do things.

You can wait for ever for the government or someone else to do it for you. But your children are your responsibility and thats the truth of it.

Watch the programme whilst its still being aired and at least do that for them.

This is personally how I'm going to contribute and it will help. First of all I stopped wearing make-up. The reason because all cosmetics are made by factories who use chemicals to produce them. Then I've stopped using shower gels and body lotions for the same reason. They are all produced and made from chemicals some of which go into the environment. Polluting it. I've stopped using all household detertergents except disinfectant, For the same reason.

I'm cutting down on everything else I consume. My foood intake especially. Because I love my son dearly and I want him to live in a world that is thriving.

If everybody in the Nation did this then the impact alone it would have on the world's environment would be so beneficial. As people we owe it to ourselves and everyone else because at present we are using 5.33 Global Hectars of the World's Productive Bio Capacity.

I think this a small price to pay for having the peice of mind that somehow at least I am trying to save my Planet. And somehow give my son a future in it.

Is wine allowed? Made from fruit, and all that.....

LancsLassie · 25/11/2011 12:40

You can together with your friends and grow your own grapes and make your own. Making beer is easy.

After watching David's programme today what I am going to do now is stop using washing up liquid. I haven't used soap powder for my last two washes. I am going to use bicarbonate of soda instead for my dishes which was good enough for Gran.

What clothes I can wash by hand I will. With soap.

I'll avoid using my dryer unless it is absolutely necessary. I won't use my hoover unless that is absolutely necessary. In fact I'm going to buy a ewebank sweeper and stop using my hoover. Because I would rather see a field full of grass and I'm not bothered about bits on my carpet.

I'm not buying ANY MORE CLOTHES. I don't need. That goes for knickers and bras. I'm not buying any more shoes I don't need. I have one cheap pair of trainers and I won't be buying any more.

I won't be buying any more bedding, curtains, cushions, towels etc. Pictures ornaments etc. My furniture I can still sit and eat off.

The trouble is what people don't realise we are spoilt to death whilst most of the planet are struggling to survive at our expense.

I don't smoke anymore so I won't have to decorate. Everyone can grow fruit and vegetables in their garden or in their homes.

This is what I am doing. I don't look at it as a sacrifice Whilst I am doing I AM SAVING THE PLANET.
