It's very interesting.

I find their sense of community admirable and am wondering how the British teenagers are going to cope!

Half watching. Felt sorry for the lad whose mum was imprisoned, split his family up good and proper didn't it?

Sidge · 24/11/2011 21:48

It did didn't it? Poor lad, I think he'll really benefit from the companionship on this trip.

It made me cry when he was talking about paying back the respect by getting his hair cut. Really enjoying this programme.

hellhasnofury · 24/11/2011 21:57

There have been some big lessons learned in a very short space of time. I thought all the kids did us proud and I was surprised at that.

befuzzled · 24/11/2011 22:00

was expecting huge clash - they were all lovely, biught a tear to my eyes - suspect the next family might be a different story though

fivegomadindorset · 24/11/2011 22:02

Loved it, fascinating and agree about the poor boy.

Honeymum · 24/11/2011 22:09

The Amish are just gorgeous aren't they?? The series on their own teenagers last year was good too. I hope that this experience makes the difference that that the boy who lives in a hostal needs. Interesting stuff.

katkitya · 24/11/2011 22:33

I watched it the last time. Im recording it. Im wondering how are they doing it this time as before they went to different parts of the UK to stay with different types of families. Wont the Amish families all be very similar?

DeliaSucksStuffingBalls · 24/11/2011 22:42

I'd quite like to be Amish actually.

ggirl · 24/11/2011 22:47

katkitya-that's what I was thinking but maybe we will be surprised.

I too was pleasantly surprised with the uk teens ,thought the producers would have relished using some horrific obnoxious teens .

boschy · 25/11/2011 12:38

I loved this programme! was in floods by the end, and even DH was wiping his eye in a manly way. Jonathan and Mariella were so sweet and good, and the teens were lovely too.

Looking forward to the next one, I hope it doesnt turn nasty.

Can one become Amish? I dont know if they have converts? (not sure I'd really want to, but just wondering)

VivaLeBeaver · 25/11/2011 14:09

I want that poor boy from the hostel to go and live with Jonathan and Mariella. They could sort of adopt him, would be good for all of them. How sad that they can't seem to have children either. Both obviously desperate for them.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/11/2011 15:00

I had a tear in my eye when Jonathan was telling the teens that, although they lived on the other side of the world, if they ever needed help, to get in touch and they'd do what they could to help. And when Aunt Irma made such an impression on one of the girls (sorry, can't remember her name), too.

Altogether a lovely programme this week, and I am looking forward to next week.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/11/2011 15:58

I wish I'd seen the other programme about the Amish teens that came over here. It must have been brave of their parents to let them.

hellhasnofury · 25/11/2011 17:36

Don't the Amish send their teens off for a year to experience life outside the Amish community? I'm sure they do and i'm sure the majority come back freely to live the lifestyle they were raised in.

AKissIsNotAContract · 25/11/2011 19:51

Yes they do. They call it Rumspringa. The Amish teen parties are known for being quite wild. But then most return to the Amish way of life once it's over.

mrsjay · 25/11/2011 21:05

My dh also wiped away a manly tear at the end was a great programme and the teens really seemed lovely , seems a lovely way of life and the familiy he lived with didnt seem as strict as some , I watched a programme on discovery a few days ago was called escaping the amish where the teens were leaving , I cried at that too ,

katkitya · 25/11/2011 22:18

Is fertility treatment allowed, I wonder? Or, adoption? they would make such lovely parents. What a gorgeous couple.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/11/2011 22:27

I suspect if they can't have kids then they'll say it's gods wish.

mrsjay · 27/11/2011 11:02

I watched a baby behind bars programme and a womans baby was fostered by an amish familiy they took in alot of the babies who didnt get into the nursery of the prison
, TBH i dont think we know alot about the amish because they dont really shout their beliefs from the rooftops , iyswim

katkitya · 27/11/2011 12:53

Possibly in America they know more. They cant be that closed if they are making tv programes to show their way of life. I wonder if they are different levels of being Amish?

SauvignonBlanche · 27/11/2011 12:56

It made me cry too, I wanted the poor boy from the hostel to stay with that lovely couple.

VivaLeBeaver · 27/11/2011 13:09

I think there's old order Amish and new order Amish and even in the two orders there are different levels of how strictly they observe stuff.

I watched the Amish teenager programme on 4od the other day, the one where the Amish teens came to the UK. The Amish men had there had shirts that buttoned all the way down where Jonathan said they wore shirts with three buttons so they weren't tempted to unbutton too much.

lisad123 · 28/11/2011 21:36

I think some are slightly stricted than others.
I dont think IVF would be allowed because of what happens to the eggs that are fertilised but then found to have problem, its still alife, but under iVF it would be distroyed (im not 100% sure thats right for them).
The teens did very well and hope that poor lad gets some support, kinda hoping he will return to Johnathen and his wife.
What was the name of the one about teens leaving community last year?

kreechergotstuckupthechimney · 29/11/2011 15:19

Finally watched this. What a lovely couple those two Amish were. Not sure I'd fancy M life, it was pretty hard. I couldn't do the fishing either.
Wouldn't it be lovely, if in fantasy land, long haired boy went to live with the couple and got himself out of the hostel.
They (both parties) seemed genuinely fond of each other.
Not sure about the fertility thing. I saw a programme about either a hospital or an Amish community where a child have leukaemia and the parents were dead set against her being treated. They had to fork out shed loads of money because they didn't believe in insurance or didn't have any.
The child lived BTW.
