Who has sky? I have a question I hope you can answer

WE had sky installed last February, never had a problem with it.

But I got a call the other day from someone at Sky asking if I wanted to take out insurance on the dish and box now that we've had it for almost a year. Once we've had it for a year we can pay an insurance premium each month incase something goes wrong with the dish, and to cover the box incase it stops working or breaks down.

Does anyone else pay this insurance premium?
Is it worth it? Is it likely that the box will break down or the dish will malfunction?

any comments?

We have had our dish and box for 3 years and never had anything go wrong with it. Dh is always really sceptical of these insurance deals and refuses to pay them at all!
Mind you have to say if we had taken the insurance on we would have paid more in insurance than a new box would cost so I suppose he has a point!

I never took the insurance they offered. I figured if it broke and they wanted to charge me to fix it, then I would go with Telewest or NTL. As it happens, we have just left Sky and they offered us a new box to stay with them.

No, no and no.

Have to say I had a cynical suspicion, when I got the first letter, that they would zap my dish or skybox with some kind of electric transmission and break it, but they didn't, bless them. (Have had ours at least 3 years but forget exactly.)

We had our sky+ box replaced today. We were out of warranty but paid £65 for an engineer callout which apparently includes parts and labour. In the light of that the insurance would have to be very low to be worthwhile (our first problem in over 5 years).

Hi - we have had problems with the digibox in the past although never anything wrong with the dish. We dont have the insurance but only because we think its a bit of a rip-off seeing as they make so much money out of us - grrrrr! However when ours played up a couple of years ago we did seem to be over a barrel as they said it was game over and our only option was to buy another, I cant remember how much they quoted at the time but it was a couple of hundred at least I think. DH said you must be able to get them cheaper than that from another source but it was still big money. In the end we shouted a lot and found some loophole which I honestly cant recall and in the end they supplied another box at cost (something like £50). Depends on how much of an impact not having sky would have on you, I recall it took several weeks to sort out. HTH and Ive not waffled on too much.

I should have added that my instinct was to say no, what I said was that I'd think about and could he phone me back nearer the time.

I'm a bit sceptical of these insurance deals all the time and I hate it when they phone up and put you on the spot.

Will say no when they phone back and not worrying my self silly about making a bad decision.

Thank you

Be prepared for them to phone you every 3 days for the rest of your life! Sky sales people seem very persistent.
I've resisted all offers of insurance so far, because I reckon that within a few months the cost of the insurance is greater than the replacement costs.
FWIW my father in law cancelled sky when he moved house, and was inundated with offers from sky to sign up again, ie 2 months free, etc.

No - I wouldn't pay the £65 call out either. If forget who it was on here (search 'sky') they know how to get into a hidden part of the box to reset it - cod fixed hers using the code!

Also - if you threaten to leave them - you'll probably end up getting 3 months 3 viewing just to keep you!

ladymuck · 03/01/2006 22:25

I think it depends on how well your toddler has wrecked the box Joolstoo!
Our previous sky+ box had vents on the top...
I'll leave you to imagine the rest, but suffice to say that it wasn't something that resetting some codes could have sorted. And I suspect wouldn't have been covered by an insurance policy.

Bibiboo · 04/01/2006 18:44

Don't bother. Every time mine has broken and they've wanted the £65 to fix it I've asked to cancel and they've fixed it for free. That's happened about 3 times in the last 3 years.
