shame if it isn't a series, was very interesting - still think it's a bit wacko to get married to god and what was that lying flat on your face thing about

oranges123 · 26/10/2011 09:47

I saw the end but missed quite a lot I think. Why did Clara choose an enclosed order? And did we see anyhitng of the order and what her life would entail? When she was getting ready to go off, I kept thinking - don't throw away all your letters - what if you change your mind???? But I suppose you can't think like that.

Eyelasher · 26/10/2011 09:48

lol at SEA

close orders nuts imo - spec for her

I really liked Clara, thought she was the sort of person who would probably be a great friend and perhaps in time a wonderful wife / partner (well, would definitely be wife, for her, as a devout Catholic) and mother.

This is one of the things that frustrates me somewhat (and I say this as a practising Catholic), that there are so few roles for women in the church that a young woman with lots to offer and devout belief feels that the only way she can dedicate her life to God is through joining a convent.

At least in other denominations she could be a deacon, or a vicar, or even a vicar's wife!

lizzieloubee1 · 26/10/2011 11:10

The thing about make-up made me sad.

Also, the bit where Catherine said she wanted to serve and bring joy... how does one do that when the have to stay in the convent and hide from the world? If she wants to bring joy, go and work/volunteer for a charity or something.

noddyholder · 26/10/2011 12:25

It was great. Ds sat down with typical wth is this you are watching and didn't move his arse for the whole show! Very interesting. I knew that the red haired girl wouldn't last as she had too much going on in her real life that was good iyswim. The other girl although flaky and a bit all over the place is imo a more likely candidate in the long run as her current life seemed empty and superficial and even her 2 sisters seemed cold. I wouldn,t be surprised if she goes back to it at a later date.

Pancakeflipper · 26/10/2011 12:34

Even my DP glanced up from his iPAD to check the possible nun potential.

I really liked Clara. She was fully of love and life. She's an asset to God if she becomes a nun or not. I hope she builds on God in a community and not a nunnery. She's a real people person.

I didn't know what to make of the blonde one, she just seems to be bewildered with life and not capable of making such a live changing decision yet.

Pancakeflipper · 26/10/2011 12:34

life not live

DumbledoresGore · 26/10/2011 12:35

I agree that Clara seemed hideously too young to be making the commitment to join an enclosed order, but, and this shocks me to say so, I actually knew someone who made the same decision at a similar age - think she may have been about 25. That was about 25 years ago and as far as I know, she is still a nun, only allowed to see family once a year for half an hour or whatever the limitations are.

I don't know how Clara's family stood by and let her do such a thing. I know it is her choice, but seeing her prepare to go in (throwing away all her possessions etc) it felt like watching someone prepare to commit suicide. As a mother, I would throw myself in front of a bus rather than see one of my children end their lives - which I realise she wasn't doing, but it felt like that. Poor family! Those poor little brothers! I hope Clara finds fulfillment doing something else. Enclosed orders are such dreadful places. At least the missionary nuns were active in the community.

As for Catherine - bizarre. I couldn't see her in a church, let alone a convent.

scarletfingernail · 26/10/2011 13:28

I was glued to this last night after coming across it accidentally. So pleased Clara left the enclosed order. My heart broke for her when she was packing up her things saying she wasn't bothered about possessions but she was bothered about people. I almost wanted to shout at her "don't go and hide yourself away then, go and work for a charity and get more involved with the church".

I was also Confused by Blondie and thought that nun was so lovely when she was advising her to leave it for now and if it's right for her she will still want to join in a year's time.

I cringed at the heads, shoulders, knees and toes singing in the classroom and I can imagine they draw a lot of attention when they whizzing round town in that old banger Grin

MaterMetella · 26/10/2011 13:37

Just watched it on I-player - fascinating. Agree with comments re Blondie. Just bizarre. And agree point expecto makes about roles for women in catholic church. V thought provoking.

fivegomadindorset · 26/10/2011 13:38

I stumbled across this last night and will watch again on iplayer, absolutely fascinating.

Eyelasher · 26/10/2011 14:41

iklboo · 26/10/2011 16:35

I didn't see this. Please tell me the theme tune wasn't Wham parody?
Young nuns, giving up fun.......

(ps I know nuns don't give up fun. I was being tongue in cheek. The Franciscan nuns I once met were a scream!).

101handbags · 27/10/2011 10:49

So pleased to find this dicussion here, I watched this last night. Absolutely loved it. Fascinating, sad, riveting. I really recommend it to anybody. So pleased Clara left, as others have said here, she has a lot to offer the outside world. I really hope she doesn't go back. Catherine just seemed to be attempting to live out her dreams from childhood and the nuns were right to reject her this time. I thought maybe the bit with the Franciscan nuns might have been added as an afterthought when it didn't work out for Clara and Catherine in the interests of a balanced documentary - along the lines of 'hey look, nuns can actually be a bit whacky and happy...'

Loved the nuns in the car saying people do a double-take then get out their mobiles. Just something inherently funny about a car full of nuns.

I really didn't like the idea of the enclosed order. 7 hours a day praying just seems really self-indulgent. I wasn't sure if they do anything else? Whereas the ones in the community were helping people. When Clara went into the enclosed order and made that comment about the door closing and her family being on the other side, dh said if that wasn't a church set-up people would be calling it a cult.

Didn't get the model at all and wasn't surprised they told her to think on it. I know she'd been saying she'd become a nun since the age of 4, but it really seemed like an image thing. That head covering was very lacy! I think she was a bit lost and a bit in love with the idea of getting a calling as though it was somehow glamorous. Playing with the idea while wearing full make-up and partying. I couldn't see her making that choice and giving up all the things she'd need to.

I hope they make more of these as it was genuinely fascinating.

TMMJ - Now you're talking!

Seriously, clangermum, the woman I knew who went into an enclosed order did so to do just that: pray all day. As far as I know, that is what her life has become. No good works, (well, they would say praying was their good work) but nothing practical done to help the community.

I just think it sounds mind-numbingly boring. I have been on retreats and spent days in contemplation and prayer - it's great. But doing that for the rest of your (long, if you are still only early 20s) life? It sounds like a deathwish to me.

But maybe I am missing something great and glorious. Yeah, I guess I must be.
