Downton Abbey - yawn

Does anyone else think that, for some reason, some TV series get a ridiculous amount of publicity. There always seems to be something about Downton Abbey in the media (the Guardian's got a double page article today). What's the big deal about it? Is it that good (I can't be bothered with something that looks like an updated Upstairs Downstairs)?

OP posts:
CheerfulYank · 15/09/2011 22:50

I don't know if they actually did bumsex. If it was her first time doing anything ...it seems a bit unlikely.

Maybe oral?

SansaLannister · 15/09/2011 22:55

Maybe he looked at her and she turned him to stone. She came across as one seriously frigid bitch.

I thought I'd give it a go because of Maggie Smith, but the rest of it was so bloody annoying I was losing the will to live.

But then, I don't like Julian Fellowes. I think he's a ridiculous, pompous old twat.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 16/09/2011 15:08

I thought the Guardian article was very good actually. Tanya Gold's very funny.

Surely it was oral/masturbation rather than up the arse!

I think it's a bit overhyped and over-rated, but I watched the last one and I'm looking forward to this one. It's highly watchable and not too demanding and just soapy enough.

ppeatfruit · 16/09/2011 16:12

Yes i agree LadyClarice. It's not a yawn i love it, just because it's not filled with crap celebrities and every character doesn't have a different shade of dyed blonde hair. Grin

In fact if you'd stuck with it sansaYou'd have enjoyed its psychological edge its sexy menservants and some good acting (something there's very little of a on T.V. ) (I agree it's a touch predictable though) but miles better than The Hour IMO

cheerful Howya! (waves) i would think rather than up the bum they'd have gone for a mutual xxxx (rhymes with your name Smile)

picnicbasketcase · 16/09/2011 16:19

I didn't think it meant bumsex, but rather that he died mid-blowie.

(I love a nice classy drama, me.)

ShowOfHands · 16/09/2011 16:25

Was deffo implying anal imho.

And it's fabulous.

Downton, not anal.

Although I've never done anal you understand.

picnicbasketcase · 16/09/2011 16:31

There's going to have to be a consensus of opinion on what it meant or there will be women all over the country having a fight like

SansaLannister · 16/09/2011 16:45

I don't see the point in shows about such times. They were shameful, IMO. I can't abide all that lord and lady shite, either.

ShowOfHands · 16/09/2011 16:53

Too right Sansa. Can't see why they teach Shakespeare anymore either. All that thee and thou bollocks. Completely irrelevant to modern society.

[tic]

SansaLannister · 16/09/2011 17:06

This is a load of over-hyped ITV soap opera about a bunch of self-important twats. What next, a lovely, well-acted soap about West Indian plantation owners and the happy slaves who served them?

CheerfulYank · 16/09/2011 18:21

Could anyone really do anal their first time?

Confused

Of course you could, but...

IndridCold · 16/09/2011 18:23

I enjoy it , but I don't think it's as fabulous as it thinks it is. It is, however, a welcome relief from the endless reality TV crap which seems to dominate all channels.

Tinkerisdead · 16/09/2011 18:37

Whether the times were shameful or not, they happened. I love family history and so many people were in domestic service its a good insight. Articles show the lengths the show goes to to portray accuracy. Its not just about the lords and ladies but the stories of the people below stairs. Things like lady mary being tainted now as a fallen woman, in parallel to women in service who couldnt entertain relations, or got married and would have to leave. I find the portrayal of society interesting. Esp as it's the time my grandad was born.

SansaLannister · 16/09/2011 18:39

'Could anyone really do anal their first time?'

Why not? I mean, it doesn't make a difference if someone's not a vaginal virgin the first time she has anal sex, although it's not something I'd ever do, much less as an alternative to losing vaginal virginity.

MardyBra · 16/09/2011 18:40

Only on MN could a thread about Downtown quickly turn into a discussion about whether Lady Mary takes it up the arse...

Tinkerisdead · 16/09/2011 18:43

Could we ask mn towers to contact itv and ask? Like a campaign.
Does lady mary like bumsex friday?

AnyoneButLulu · 16/09/2011 18:49

It's tosh, but it is enjoyable tosh which someone appears to have put some effort into rather than the usual "will this do?" bollocks.

Personally I will be watching Spooks. Mary Schmary, I need to know whether Ruth will finally get her man.

MardyBra · 16/09/2011 18:51

It's nice frock tosh. Bit of totty too.

sqweegiebeckenheim · 17/09/2011 01:50

I NEVER picked up on the bumsex. I was really confused wondering when he said they could 'do stuff' and still be a virgin. Shocked I am.

SansaLannister · 17/09/2011 02:01

Blowjobs, cunnilingus, manual sex/mutual mastrubation, dry humping. The ol' 'everything but' (no pun intended). Silly to think that would translate to her being a fallen woman even then, given she was so highborn. English history is dotted with many such women who still married even kings with such a background being well-known. If she had enough money, or some land or something that was wanted - youth, lands, family connections, it was little enough bother.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 17/09/2011 08:34

To settle the one up the bum no harm done argument, DH is having people round for dinner tonight. I'll ask him to get to the relevant bit and canvas opinion.
He won't give a multiple choice, simply ask who thinks what.

ppeatfruit · 17/09/2011 09:31

doctorswife I agree, even more interesting is how annoying it must have been to have had no privacy at all (unless you were very clever and did it in the forest a la Lady Chatterly even there you 'd find woodsmen etc. !) whether you lived upstairs or downstairs in big houses.

GenevieveHawkings · 18/09/2011 11:43

"What's the big deal about it? Is it that good (I can't be bothered with something that looks like an updated Upstairs Downstairs)?"

What a muppet. Why start a thread saying "yawn" about a programme you've never even seen? People like the OP make me go "yawn".

ppeatfruit · 18/09/2011 20:01

It's much better than Upstairs Downstairs which is very stagey and false in comparison. They've thrown a lot of money at it the script and plot is a bit predictable but it's well worth watching for the good character development and use of a proper mansion.

i agree about the OP it's like people who class ALL costume dramas as SHXX I mean we did wear those outfits 100 yrs ago didn't we? Well not US but our ancestors which doesn't make their feelings shxx does it?

NickettyNacketty · 18/09/2011 20:10

Love it. The costumes, the quietness followed by intense drama, the repressed romance and the bitchiness of that footman and maid.
