Honey I'm Killing The Kids - am I oversensitive feeling a bit sick?

While I usually agree with most of the rules that woman comes up with, the whole idea of the prog and the way it's presented just makes me feel a bit ill! It's rather vile...
Firstly, unlike things like Supernanny etc who are more sensitively kind of passing on skills etc, this prog is dictating to families how they SHOULD be living their lives - in order to prevent their children from , well, dying! It just feels so dictatory (what's the right word here?!)
Secondly, those pictures they come up with of the children in the future are only probable if the kids carried on the way they are - there is every chance they will grow up& change their ways somewhere along the line surely! It's all a bit ridiculous imo. shock tactics & all that.
I prefer Wife Swap and Supernanny!

Anyone else feel the same? I couldn't see another thread about this on the list...

I watched the one on BBC1 tonight at 7pm and I really wasn't keen. And does anyone think they just get a picture of the mother and make the child them look like her? Did anyone else see tonights? Don't you think they made the little girl at 40 look exactly like her mum!

AND!! A child smoking at 4!!!! Am I very naive? Surely not 4 that is so sad

MrsSpoon · 30/11/2005 21:48

I didn't see tonight's episode but saw a revisited programme on BB3 the other night. Thought it was good but also thought like you, bournville, that this would only be the case if they continue with these habits but I suppose the habits and example we are setting to our children now whilst they are young are what they are most likely to stick with.

Although I think I would need to see some more before making a judgement as this one show seemed pretty good.

bourneville · 30/11/2005 22:05

Atomic - as far as I remember I don't think all of them look like their mothers, but tonight's certainly did! And the boy looked like his brother! (well, a v unhealthy version.

And I was v v v v and about smoking from 4 too. How could that happen??? Perhaps that woman actually needed shock tactics...

MrsSpoon - i agree we should always be setting our kids a good example as they are most likely to stick with it later on, it's just that the prog seems to be saying "don't follow these rules and you'll f*ck up your kids". As I said, I happen to agree with most of the rules she sets (though perhaps not to the same extreme - the odd naughty bit of a food is ok eg!) but I don't think the consequences of NOT following them are extreme like she says and I don't think it necessarily means that she's right that the rules are the one & only way a family should be bringing up their kids.

I agree with others about the shock tactics - BUT they do seem to work. I have watched a few of these on BBC3 and the families do seem to be a lot healthier and happier by the end. Some predictors of future health, like coping strategies and obesity issues do have childhood roots, so I think there is something in it, but agree with others it's a bit all or nothing.

GoodKingWestCountryLass · 30/11/2005 23:06

The thing is, the piccies of them when they are carry on the bad habits give them criminal haircuts and not smiling faces, when they are following the rules they have a decent hairstyle and a smile on their faces. Its all a bit superficial and as for the scientific aspects to the photo generation, it is just their assumtpions and software if you ask me! Call me cynical....

MrsSpoon · 30/11/2005 23:12

LOL WestCountryLass! The episode I saw had the boy with a big potato head and a crew cut and the girl looking like a bag lady, both of them very glum.

handlemecarefully · 30/11/2005 23:14

Well the ends justify the means I think....

There's definitely a place for shock tactics

Caligyulea · 30/11/2005 23:55

tbh I think families such as the ones they find need the shock tactics.

I don't know which family it was tonight, but exactly how difficult is it to understand that if you feed your kids lard from a trough, force them to passively smoke and allow them to sit for 8 hours a day watching TV or playing playstations, they will be fat with no table manners? It's really not a difficult cause - effect concept, but some people obviously can't grasp it without the shock.

MistleToo · 30/11/2005 23:59

actually the boy was doing his own smoking (10 he was)

I turned it off - does my head in!

Furball · 01/12/2005 07:25

It made me chuckle as the boys first projection at 40 he looked a right thug and they even gave him a missing front tooth. I noticed in the next projection that they were both smiling and the also ended up with completely different hairstyles. OK so this programme is very weird, but, if it cures some peoples bad living habits then surely it's a good thing? And yes at that boy starting smoking a 4! My ds is 4 and the thought is horrific. But there again if your mum smokes 60 a day what do you expect, surely to him then it's 'normal'.
