OMG this show is brilliant - a friend of my DH lent us the box set a couple of weeks ago, just finished watching Series 1 - it is so good, DH and I were exhausted as we were still watching it at 1am nearly every night.

Watched Episode 1 of Series 2 last night, first half seemed to be getting to know the characters but BAM by the end of it, I can't wait to get the kids to bed tonight, glass of wine and drool at McNulty and Stringer.... Grin

Anyone else watch it or watched it? (no spoilers please!).

The Wire is the best tv show ever made, imho. I watched the whole series last year, and I was highly addicted. If you need to talk, talk to me Grin

dreamingofcalm · 15/07/2011 16:54

DH and myself have also just started watching it after my sister went on and on about it. We are up most nights till the early hours watching it too, we're on series 3 episode 4. DH has gone away for the weekend so will have to wait till Monday night for next instalment, don't know whether I can last that long as I have got used to a daily dose of Omar and Bunk Smile .

fannybanjo · 15/07/2011 18:00

The episode in series 1 where Bunk goes off with that lady and she rings McNulty and he finds him pissed and sat on her toilet dressed in her pink robe because he's set fire to his clothes "cos they smell of pussy" was hilarious. Their drunken chats at a bar are brilliant. How to be able to write TV gold...EnvyGrin

dreaming you sound like DH and I...Grin. We had to rein it in as I was exhausted yesterday - hungover from watching The Wire... I know we're getting old when we get into bed at 10 and are excited to watch 2 hours of Baltimore Brutality!! Blush

Episode 2 Series 2 tonight... Corona chilling...

muminlondon · 17/07/2011 00:38

We're on series 4 and savouring it. The end of series 3 was positively Shakespearean. Like others it took me about 4 episodes of series 1 to really get it - I later read an interview with David Simon where he admitted enjoying how bewildered most viewers were at the beginning. Just the most brilliant show ever.

DukesOfTripHazard · 17/07/2011 10:24

Just starting season four here. Only let ourselves have two a night.

rainbowtoenails · 17/07/2011 10:52

We watched them all a few months ago. I did need to watch some episodes a couple of times before moving on. Some of it moves very fast.
I think it was interesting how different the geography of the ' projects' is from deprived areas of the uk. Eg it isnt very densly populated and even the very poor people have th3ir owb hoyses with own back and front doors rather than in tower blocks.
I foun# the series in the school very interesting, you can see some of the same problems !s here eg low funding and working ti the test. It is scary to see very young kids desend into the gang culture.

fannybanjo · 17/07/2011 15:39

I had a night off from it last night, it was becoming a bit obsessive..Blush.

We are on series 2 episode 3 - again TGI's series hard to grasp at first but I know by episode 4 I'll be wanting to stay up all night to finish the box set Grin

What upset me the most on series 1 was when the dealers were giving away free vials of heroin to get them hooked - it was like someone was throwing millions of pounds in the air. They were like scavengers. How sad if that's what your life has become and it's common in every country. Angry Sad. Drugs are evil.

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 17/07/2011 15:40

TGI's series....!? This bloody spellcheck is a joke - obviously should be THIS series...Blush

Moomaloo · 21/07/2011 13:29

I agree MuminLondon - the end of series three is the best tv I have ever seen. We gorged on all 5 series when dd was newborn and breast feeding. Hope all the violence she was subjected to has not harmed her too much!

LaterAlligator · 21/07/2011 14:23

Ooh fellow Wire obsessives - I'm glad I've found you :)

DH and I worked our way through the box sets in record time a few years ago - think it may be time for a revisit!

I feel I should admit that I have a rather embarrassing crush on Bunk Blush
(I think it's the voice...)

fannybanjo · 21/07/2011 18:51

Thank F for that - I thought I'd killed my own Thread...Grin

Currently half way through Series 2. Again took about 3 episodes to take it all in and BAM!! Again I'm addicted. Relishing every minute of it and so happy I have 3 more series to watch however I'm preparing to wallow in grief once I've no more to watch...Blush

Was Angry at D'Angelo story ending how it did.

OP posts:
LaterAlligator · 22/07/2011 11:26

We definitely went through a serious withdrawal phase once we realised we had worked our way through all 5 series. So we ended up buying and watching all 6 (or 7, I forget) series of Homicide. No wonder we're always broke!
It was good, but very different to the Wire.

LaterAlligator · 22/07/2011 11:28

And Fannybanjo - the D'Angelo story was got to me too! Definitely didn't see that coming :(

fannybanjo · 22/07/2011 17:18

DH is away camping this weekend so I'm gonna go buy a bottle of Sauvignon and relish watching the rest of Series 2 tonight... I'll have to watch them again though when he's back but there so intricate that I know it'll be like watching them for the first time. Or I may go back and watch first few of Series 1 again. I think I'd enjoy them more second time around. Ohhh cannot wait for The Wire marathon...Grin

Best series ever.

LaterAlligator, have you watched Treme? Wendell Pierce is one of the main characters in that too.

ITryToBeZenBut · 25/07/2011 19:58

I LOVED the wire so much. Oh the joys of finding an addictive boxset - I wish I could recapture that feeling we had when we started watching this amazing series. We too had a 'just one more' debate night after night.

I couldn't believe it when I found out McNulty and Stringer Bell were english actors - and McNulty and old etonian at that. I may have had an evening to myself and was surfing youtube for more McNulty and there he was with a plum english accent.

NHScutback · 25/07/2011 20:36

Altogether now shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

LaterAlligator · 26/07/2011 10:01

Ooh no - will have to get on Amazon. I've heard of Treme, but haven't seen it. Is it good?

I had to get on YouTube straight away too when I heard that Stringer Bell and McNulty were English. I couldn't believe it when I heard them talking after 5 series of their on-screen accents!

MCos · 27/07/2011 15:54

I loved Treme. S2 just finished.
The story and characters are interesting, the music is great. It is set in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
At least 2 of the actors are from the wire, and I think they also have producers/script writers in common.

We pull the torrent from internet, and watch it on TV through the PS3.

areyoutheregoditsmemargaret · 29/07/2011 15:29

You're so lucky to have so much Wire to go, OP. I cried at the end of series 5, couldn't believe I would no longer be living with these characters, they'd become so real to me.

Agree, do not read a word about it on the web until it's all over.

And disagree re subtitles, we watched with them throughout and they helped massively, not least when it came to remembering all the characters' names. They didn't distance me from it at all, quite the opposite. If you're finding it hard, then switch to them!

fannybanjo · 01/09/2011 20:53

I am bumping this as I have only 2 episodes left of Series 5 to watch

Have absolutely loved The Wire. It's not "perfect" but as far as a TV series goes, it is damn near.

Series 3 and 4 were brilliant, especially last few episodes of Series 3.

Series 1 my favourite though, so gritty.

Series 5 a bit blah really, still excellent but not a patch on first 4.

Can't wait to start watching it all over again!

OP posts:
travispickles · 01/09/2011 21:02

Bloody brill - how I loved Stringer Bell! And that bit.... Shock

fannybanjo · 01/09/2011 21:56

you and me both Travis, was bit Shock at that storyline as was with Omar's too.

OP posts:
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/09/2011 11:38

I'm rationing myself by getting them through Love Film in series order otherwise I would be staying up ridiculously late every evening watching it (can't put it on until the kids have gone to bed).

It amuses me that two of the main characters are played by English actors. Is it series 5 where you have Dominic West doing an American doing an English accent.
