Stupid Corrie Adoption Storyline

Anyone else annoyed by this? It's the most ridiculous thing I've seen, I think.
I know dozens of adoptive families up and down the country, and NOT ONE of them has had several weeks of "trialling" a child in their home, having them stay overnight, having NO experience or inkling as to their history or past trauma, and then that child having the final say in whether or not she wants to live with them.
WTF?
Last night, Anna was talking about the "review" they had, where it was decided that everything's Ok, and she can go and live with them. REVIEW?
OK - the reality is that you do NOT meet the child until after Matching Panel, which is a massive deal, and comes at the end of an incredibly long, tedious at times, tense and emotional process.

It's really annoyed me that they had the opportunity to present adoption in a realistic light, and promote the welfare of children in the care system. It's not even that they've sensationalised it - they've just not bothered getting any of the processes or facts right. they might as well have had a pregnancy, where the man gave birth out of his bum, for all the correlation with real life here.

and breathe....

I don't know a lot about the adoption process but would have imagined that the Windasses were probably not perfect adoption material anyway and that they seem to have very little awareness or knowledge of anything that child has gone through. It is a shame that it hasn't been handled realistically though and an insult to the families who have been through the process.

Yes, that's how I feel. They had a really good opportunity to present adoption in a realistic light - and then just went completely weird on it.

And the Windasses, having no regard for her past or the things that are important to her - before we adopted we asked every question we could possibly think, and then went back for more. With adoption, the one thing you are, is prepared - and I agree. it IS insulting to dismiss the process in this manner

thank you!! :)

Must admit I am fine with it because while knowing nothing about adopting this has come across as very much a soap and nowhere near where I expect adopting is in real life. I watch soaps to escape reality not to learn through them.

RipVanLilka · 26/03/2011 19:32

I haven't watched all of it. Honestly, the point of soaps seems to be just to cram as much OTT drama into 30+ minutes as possible!

However, I think the girl they are adopting is older right? I think older chilren do in fact get the say on whether they stay or not. I've adopted two older girls and the introductions would have stopped if they went to bits and then refused to move. Don't think I'd have been able to finalize if they refused either

However, it would be nice if they had had a bit of her history etc. And I suppose what happens now is either they all live happily ever after, with no problems, or it all goes majorly wrong and they disrupt?? Or they have problems and magically some therapy just appears for her out of thin air?!!

I'm with you though, realism alongside an escape from reality could be done with some storylines

sterrryerryoh · 26/03/2011 19:53

I get where you're coming from, Mam - and you're right, it doesn't need to educate. I just wonder why they bother doing it at all, though, if they're going to pay no heed to what actually happens.

Ripvan - yes, you're right, of course - older children do get consulted - but this is before matching panel! she's been to stay over twice, and they've not been to matching yet!

I was thinking the same thing about where the story is going to go. They seem to know nothing about her history, and it will be awful if it's disrupted. But equally infuriating for the viewers if it all just goes plain sailing!

I know that I'm coming at this from a personal viewpoint, and most people probably don't really notice, which is fine. I just don't understand why they would take on such a potentially interesting storyline, and ignore any resemblance to reality.

Right 0 going to chill out now :)
