I didn't see it. What did it say?
I have a 4 yo DD and am quite shocked by some of the things they've been saying in the media.
I wouldn't want her learning about sex in school next year. I answer all her questions as I see fit.

withagoat · 09/03/2011 19:01

why?
what is so shameful?
why not just be open and make it a NOT a big deal

stop being so victorian

RuthChan · 09/03/2011 19:10

Excuse me?
I am NOT victorian!
I am extremely open and answer all my daughter's questions openly and honestly.
I am also careful about how much information I choose to give or not give her at such a young age.
I have read today the the government advised teaching materials include information about anal sex and oral sex. I do not think 5 year olds need to be taught about such things.
Is that SO unreasonable?

exoticfruits · 09/03/2011 19:15

I really don't think that they are teaching 5 yr olds about oral sex!! It is age appropriate. I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill!

RuthChan · 09/03/2011 19:16

Ok.
I am simply going on what I read in the news.
That is why I was so shocked.

exoticfruits · 09/03/2011 19:21

If you have got a 5yr old -ask the school-I don't think it will match up to what you saw.

GlynisIsFixed · 09/03/2011 19:27

like i posted on the Daily Mail comments board (which no surprise wasn't shown Hmm )

this material is part of a resource pack which has been passed a suitable for using with Primary school aged children. These are aged 5-11.

It does not mean your 4yr old will come home with a leaflet full of instructions on how to fellate their friends alongside a sponsor form or request for cakes to sell for Red Nose Day fundraising.

exoticfruits · 09/03/2011 19:33

If you read it in the Daily Mail what do you expect!!!!

RuthChan · 09/03/2011 19:57

I didn't read it in the Daily Mail!

Shallishanti · 09/03/2011 19:59

where did you read it then?

Noddyrocks · 09/03/2011 20:01

Flipping heck 5? That's way too young for my liking and I am not victorian. I should hope that my to be 5 year old wouldnt have a clue about sex at that age.

Noddyrocks · 09/03/2011 20:13

Theres actually another thread on this I just saw, so it is true!!

GlynisIsFixed · 09/03/2011 20:22

It's a teaching resource!!! For a whole age group!!

Kids are not going to have lessons in anal sex or how to shag on a bean bag.

Noddyrocks · 10/03/2011 14:06

I don't care what it is. It is still something I wouldnt be happy about and it should be something that parents have a say in too.

exoticfruits · 10/03/2011 14:20

I think that people are worrying unnecessarily-schools are not going to do anything without consulting parents.

freerangeeggs · 13/03/2011 01:11

Shocking. Truly shocking.

I mean who has sex on a skateboard FFS?

WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE HEALTH AND SAFETY IMPLICATIONS!!!

It reminds me of a sex ed leaflet we were given in secondary school. One of the pictures was a closeup drawing of a big erect penis, and if you looked in the background there was grass, sky and a little dog

AyeRobot · 13/03/2011 01:13

Was the little dog there for scale, freerangeeggs?

Himalaya · 13/03/2011 01:30

You can relax. This is Christian Institute/ Daily Mail scaremongering. It is a pack of materials or teachers for children up to 11. 5 year olds and 11 year olds don't get the same materials. Schools write and tell you when they are doing sex ed, and most have a parents meetingto review the materials.

scotty34 · 13/03/2011 14:26

I am a mother as well as a nursery nurse. i believe that every parent has a right to tell their child as much or as little as they like about sex.
When i was pregnant with my second child my 3 year old asked how did the baby get there,I then got a book that i have used alot in my career called the body book. We talked about feelings and special cuddles. but then she asked yes but how did it get there? so we looked futher in the book. It as pictures so we talked about it and before I new it we were talking about sperm and eggs. The next minute my 5 year old said oh right great i understand that. thanks mummy.
I think we dont give our children enough credit sometimes.

scotty34 · 13/03/2011 14:40

i also think teenage pregnancy rates are at there highest because parents dont like the thought of sex education in schools. if children were to know the facts at an age appropriate level then it may help to decrease the number of unwanted pregancy's.
sweden have a very low pregnancy rate because they have a great sex education scheme.

AyeRobot · 13/03/2011 14:41

Teenage pregnancy rates are falling.

ashamedandconfused · 14/03/2011 12:52

britains teen pg rate is down by 9% since 1988, however, in many of our inner cities and deprived areas, it is going up and up - 40 % increase in some areas! remember that if they are getting pg, they are also at huge risk of STIs, which are on the increase too

as a teacher and a mum, i think sex ed should be incorporated from the outset - that way you dont get a room full of embarrassed giggling Y5/6/7 pupils because every knows and accepts the very basics from such a young age - it is as natural as knowing about how you breathe and that your heart pumps blood around you. tell them about a flower and the bee putting pollen on the top and it joining with the female cell to make a new seed and its a tiny step from that to how a man and woman make a baby - young children accept these explanations in a very matter of fact way and dont go rushing off wanting to have sex!

in all the european countries where sex ed is well done they have very much lower teen pg rates
