Yep, I am, and feeling pretty ashamed of how much moaning I do, when compared to them, I live like a princess.

Flossie69 · 03/03/2011 21:46

I'm watching it too. It's very humbling stuff...

McDreamy · 03/03/2011 21:47

Isn't it!

Amazing people. Hard watching at times, but such a reality check.

McDreamy · 03/03/2011 22:00

That was so sad but compelling viewing, I just couldn't turn in over. Never thought I would hear Angela Ripon say shit on tv though!

I moan on daily basis about the state of my married quarter, about my job, etc, but I watched that thinking WTF am I moaning about?

MrsDrOwenHunt · 03/03/2011 22:13

me too its just awful, makes me feel like a whinging cow

andenuvathing · 03/03/2011 22:17

I just feel so fecking impotent. Sad

teej · 03/03/2011 22:18

that was seriously very informative and very good. gawd help them for next week if it's even worse - tonight was heartbreaking as it was.
interestingly, i've tended to see reggie as quite vacuous (but then i'm not his target audience). he was really very thoughtful and mature...
and go angela! it was hilarious when she was advised to hawk her butt to get cash. errr no thanks....
and Sad to see the littlie with the respiratory infection. i hope he's ok.

doonhamer · 03/03/2011 22:20

I spent the morning on the phone moaning at Modern Housing Problems about a damp patch in the bathroom. At least I have solid brick walls and a roof over our heads and food on the table and clothes and I don't have to sell my body to make money to feed my children

TwoIfBySea · 03/03/2011 22:23

Smile because otherwise what will your children think? That you don't like or want them?

Farking hell but that was powerful stuff.

McDreamy · 03/03/2011 22:25

I agree two, that was quite a moment wasn't it?

Hulababy · 03/03/2011 22:25

I could have cried for the brave lady who gave birth to a stillborn child and had to walk home the next day :(

spiderbabymum · 03/03/2011 22:41

OMG I found it sooooo shocking .

Thought I had some idea what a slum would be like .
NO Clue how truly awful it is .

Most shocking thing on the tellie in years .

teej · 03/03/2011 22:46

hula i missed that when one of my own DCs got up and called for attention. by that stage i was already giving her an extra huge hug; i'd have been a mess if i'd seen that first Sad

TigerseyeMum · 03/03/2011 22:49

Amazing viewing. Sobbed ridiculously at the end when their guide started crying.

Makes me want to give them all my money, it would make such a huge difference. Can't, sort of have to pay my bills, but will def try to donate as much as I can this year.

Digger2000 · 04/03/2011 10:01

I couldn't belive that they did all that washing for £1.60 between them and LOL at the suggestion made to Angela to give prostitution a go Hmm

And what about that lovely guy who gave Lenny extra wages because he said he'd seen how hard he was finding it. And the line about smiling for his kids to give them hope and in case they thought he didn't like them. These people are truly amazing.

There's lots of dicsussion on the Jamie's dream school thread about teens today needing resilience - blimey they could learn a lot from those people!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/03/2011 10:14

It was amazing viewing, DH and I both had a little sob while we watched it.

Reggie surprised me the most, but I think it really hit home to him that except for a few choices which his grandparents had made - that could have been his life. Which has to be a scary thought.

I want to look really carefully into what Comic Relief are doing out there. The problem if they go in and put in decent sanitation etc, is that the Kenyan government could just clear everyone out and put in people who can afford to pay higher rents.

oricella · 04/03/2011 10:25

Alibaba - it wouldn't be the government who cleared people out; it would be simple supply and demand. Most houses in Kibera are rented out by private landlords. Slum upgrading is a real issue - because as soon as you improve houses then they become unaffordable.

Another major issue in improving the slums is the sheer size - sanitation is tough because there simply isn't space; when latrines fill up it is difficult to get access to them to clear out the sludge. Kibera is littered with abandoned toilets, not to mention the flying toilets (people defecate in plastic bags and fling them in the river or wherever)

franke · 04/03/2011 12:00

I watched this too. I can't really find the words to express how I felt about it: shocked, humbled, moved. That doesn't begin to cover it really - the whole thing was heartbreaking and actually very angering.

I admire the 4 slebs for doing it - I know I couldn't, I wouldn't last 5 minutes.
