I'm excited - I didn't even know it was on, and it's got David Morrissey in it - my Sunday evening is complete Smile

Tonight! Brilliant.

southeastastra · 20/02/2011 15:11

saw preview and interview with david this morning - looks really good, blinking clashes with the promise on four though

alemci · 20/02/2011 15:23

can't wait, read book years ago

Ripeberry · 20/02/2011 19:21

Where is South Ridding anyway?

Pixel · 20/02/2011 19:26

Yorkshire isn't it?

louvert · 20/02/2011 19:45

I'm still in mourning for Lark Rise but will give this a go and see if it cheers me!

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 20/02/2011 19:48

It's set in Yorkshire by South Riding is fictional

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 20/02/2011 19:52

It is based on East Yorkshire I think (it's where she came from).
East Yorkshire is still south of North Yorkshire so it makes sort of geographical sense.

alemci · 20/02/2011 20:21

It is based around Hull and Bridlington. those places just above the Humber Estuary.

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 20/02/2011 20:22

There were 3 yorkshire ridings back in the day, i think it was north, west and east; south is fictional I think.

Northernlurker · 20/02/2011 20:25

South Riding is fictional but a lot of the book is at least semi autobigraphical. Holtby's mother was a local politician and she was horrified by the book. Holtby had to wait till she'd gone to bed then pinch old minutes and agenda papers from the bin in order to get the backround. After her death her friend Vera Brittain (Testament of Youth author and mother of Shirley Williams) had to get the book ready for publication - which involved negotiating with a grieving and inflexible Mrs Holtby. It was as Wellington would say a damned close run thing!

KurriKurri · 20/02/2011 20:30

Thank you NL - I thought there was some connection with Vera Brittain - but couldn't remember what it was.

And it was so long ago when I read the book I've forgotten the story - I know it was good though Smile

I only found out recently, the reason they were called Ridings was it was from 'trithings' which meant 'thirds' which was why there were three of them Smile

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 20/02/2011 21:06

Hoping it's going to be good! Loving a bit of t'yorkshire drama!

drivingmisscrazy · 20/02/2011 21:30

there's a lot of singing in it...

KurriKurri · 20/02/2011 21:40

Damn - had to answer the phone so will have to watch the rest on recording tomorrow. I enjoyed the bit I've seen though Smile

I am chuffing well loving it, the lead actress is fab

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 20/02/2011 21:55

She is very good, i saw her in Cabaret when it was 'revived' (don't know if that is really th right word!) in the west end a couple of years ago and she was v good!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 20/02/2011 22:05

she comes from Beverley (just looked her up on Wiki) so she is authentically East Yorkshire too.

David51 · 20/02/2011 22:13

Anyone else old enough to remember the previous TV version (early 80s?)

KurriKurri · 20/02/2011 22:41

I am David - I remember watching it with my mum when I was a teenager - (which would make it seventies -if we are remembering the same one) I know I enjoyed it - but had completely forgotten the story. Apparently (quick google)Dorothy Tutin played the lead role.

OP posts:
feedme · 20/02/2011 23:06

I saw her in Cabaret too - excellent

David51 · 21/02/2011 09:04

yes it was 70s - I was a schoolboy & had a bit of a crush on Lesley Dunlop who played Lydia

KurriKurri · 21/02/2011 13:43

Well I should have noticed from your posting name that you are obviously the same age as me - I've become slow on the uptake in my middle ageGrin

Lesley Dunlop must have been very young when she was in it, late teens maybe?
