Anyone else enjoy Zen despite not really failing to understand the plot?

We really enjoyed it last night. Beyond the man jumping/being pushed off the bridge I was a bit lost (+fell asleep at crucial plot explaining moment). DH thinks he understood it. Are we very stupid?

I've only watched the first one and did not understand that, was lovely to look at Rufus Sewell though!

Why is everyone English when it's set in Rome??

Will be drooling over the next episode on iplayer later!

I think that most of the Zen plots can be summed up more of less as follows:

  1. Zen is assigned to a case.

  2. A powerful lobby tells him to bury it ASAP and not cause any trouble or else...

  3. A second powerful lobby tells him that there is big corruption involved and that he must dig it out and cause as much fuss as possible or else...

  4. He solves the case and discovers the truth in a way that not only satisfies his own integrity, but also manages to keep both powerful lobbies happy; and he manages also to wangle a big favour for himself - in this case a flash appartment for his GF.

I like Zen. It is very easy on the eye - and Italy looks lovely too Grin.

Tbh I wasn't really following the plot, just drooling over Rufus Sewell.! Grin

I heard an interview with him and he said the English actors decided not to bother with dodgy accents, and all the actors with accents are Italian as it's a joint production with Italian tv.

Just realised my mistake in the title - what I meant was not really understanding the plot!

Jeff has the plot summaries in one I think Grin

DH and I love Zen, we were saying last night that it just makes us want to go to Rome and have lots of sex. Somehow Rome is more sexy than rainy East Lancs.

Rufus is gorgeous, those cheekbones!

thenightsky · 10/01/2011 11:27

I love it. The scenery around Rome has made me resolve to get there for a long weekend sometime soon.

I did struggle with the plot last week, but this week really concentrated and got to grips with it.

I like the idea of a hero who somehow manages to stick to his principles while everyone he's working with is cynical & corrupt.

But I agree it's a bit artificial to have English actors playing Italians - especially when they are playing alongside real Italians. It also suffered from the common problem of actors mumbling their lines, which may be realistic(?) but also makes it even more difficult to follow the plot.

Stopped watching halfway through the first one; it was so boring. And a strange sepia tone. I thought our telly had broken, but it only seems to apply to Zen.

diddl · 10/01/2011 14:55

There´s a plot?Blush

Too busy drooling over RS in a suit.Grin

Poncherello · 11/01/2011 20:31

Have had a crush on Rufus Sewell ever since watching him in Charles II then having the amazing luck of sitting at the next table in a cafe in Prague. He is just too gorgeous.

begonyabampot · 12/01/2011 12:41

Shame on you Poncherello for names dropping, lol - just jealous! he is gorgeous in this, loved him in The Taming of The Shrew.

I watched this yesterday (long train journey - desperate for something to download) I thought it was FANTASTIC!!!
I don't usually like cop things as too gory but this really had me drifting off into fantasy land. I want to spend the bulk of my working day stopping off at lovely cafes too!
I did have to watch the beginning again though to get the whole plot straight.

Ooh yes RS in a suit is fab, and what a voice!

I thought it looked a bit fifties-fiction-in-modern-dress though, all the female secretaries and male cops, and them all letching at Tania (and her boobalicious shiny blouses) but apparently the books were set in the 90s. Not to mention the only way a woman can find accomodation is for her boyfriend to fix it for her....

It also really reminded me of Cagney and Lacey - fat boss cop has a heart attack, laddish younger cops need putting in their place etc.

I was hoping it's a series, they have only filmed 3, I'm quite disappointed.

lottiejenkins · 13/01/2011 17:16

Another fan of Rufus here! Yum Yum!!! Wink

Monadami · 15/01/2011 15:38

Is it really like that in Italy where women are always asking men to have affairs? If it is, my OH says he's going to move there.

DilysPrice · 15/01/2011 15:44

It has a plot?

I raved about it to a female friend who was feeling grey, I said "you'd love it, it's called Zen, and it's a show about handsome men in suits lounging around Italian scenery" and she said that she doesn't like watching crappy reality tv shows Blush.

Montano, does your OH look like Rufus Sewell? I normally scoff at detective shows where gorgeous women keep throwing themselves at the hero, but in this case I find it strangely plausible.
