Should be interesting. A group of experts get to work with children who have been frequenly excluded. It had Ted Wragg among others.

I'll be interested to see how the 'progressives' do vs the 'traditionalists'.

ooh this sounds excellent, thanks for the reminder!

happymerryberries · 27/09/2005 22:01

I thought it was interesting. I wonder how well things go when they expect the kids to do some work......

Fascinating. They certainly had a 'real' group of kids - real trouble makers, not just disaffected under-achievers.

happymerryberries · 27/09/2005 22:08

some of them rang a few bells for sure

OP posts:
roisin · 27/09/2005 22:14

Yes, but I wouldn't want 15 of them in the same room together!

Gobbledigook · 27/09/2005 22:14

OMG - who'd be a teacher?!?! You're mad you are - but I have every admiration!

happymerryberries · 27/09/2005 22:21

roisin...how very true!

TBH we don't get that level of swearing

Interesting how the teacher switched from 'Esturarine' english to RP when he was with the kids.

I found myself cringing at Phil Beadle (?) and his mockney ways. It'll be interesting to see how this unfoldss

NomDePlume · 28/09/2005 12:24

Was he a true Mockney a la J Oliver, though ? The prog said he'd done a lot of work in the East End, had an excellent record of turning standards around.

I thought it was v interesting. The 'getting to know you' weekend, however daft looking did seem to encourage the kids to participate in the sessions, which is something that their 'standard' schools had failed to do. I'll be interested to see how long he can hold the kids attention for though and how much they actually learn from the experience.

This prog prompted a fairly in depth debate with DH as to who is to blame and who is responsible for changing things.

spacedonkey · 28/09/2005 12:28

Don't get me wrong, he seems to be an excellent and devoted teacher. I always read his column in the guardian. His "what's your intelligence" exercise was good. These kids need to feel they are good at something.

NomDePlume · 28/09/2005 12:29

Absolutely

Zephyrcat · 28/09/2005 13:35

I missed some of this last night but will be really interested in following it. My sister is 14 and an absolute nightmare. She gets letters home all the time about her being disruptive and rude. Her latest one says that she needs to start to build bridges with her tutors because none of them want her in their class. She's just chosen her GCSE options and decided to change history to PE but the tutor said no, so she chose drama and the tutor said no too so now she has to do some award thing instead of a subject. Her problem is she has fallen into the trap of thinking it's cool to be rude and arrogant. She's so stupid. Will be very interesting to see if they can turn kids like her around!

happymerryberries · 28/09/2005 16:20

While I fully agree with the concept of different intelegences and also agree that you have to help children by using this it can be over done.

Recent studies have shown that improvemnet in attainment when teachers use VAKI (ie the different intelegences) is minimal. In some cases it can even be counterproductive when you get the kinsethetic learners refusing to read and write because 'I'm a kinathetic earner, sir'.

The trouble is that the big wide world is mostly audio visual...or at least has strog eliments of that is every field. No one is going to let you return your tax form as a playdough model (moedeling has been propesed as an alternative representation for kinsathetic learners)

The real key is, I think getting shot of big chunks of the national curriculum . That way we can realy stretch the brightest, with cutting edge stuff, reinforce the middle groups so that they realy understand stuff, and apply appropriate skills to the lower atainment groups. So the kinsathetics could end up as stunning carpenters/ plumbers etc, things that they could be realy good at.

A nod in the direction of VAKi isn't going to do it for these kids long term IMHO.

And my prediction is that the kids start the act up when the novelty wears off and old Phil gets them to do some real work.

ABOUT TO START

happymerryberries · 04/10/2005 21:51

They got rid of the charming Dale then, dispite him saying that they 'couldn't'. LOL

God this brings back memories of some of last years classes. However unlike Phil I didn't have the option to send them early to lunch!

what was obvious to me was that the parents had given up on these kids but yet the it was up to the teachers to turn them around.

For example, one girl had prevously been no problem in school, but had been awful for the last 2 years. In the background, a toddler was running around. No other siblings. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. It's not rocket science in this case - but nobody was dealing with the home issue.

puddle · 06/10/2005 12:17

Is this a series?

happymerryberries · 06/10/2005 16:17

It started last week when the kids were assessed. I think it is going to run for 4 episodes, but I could be wrong about that.

I saw the toddler in the background and thought exactly the same thing BTW! Attention seaking anyone?

good

Blandmum · 12/10/2005 17:00

Just bumping this.

The delightful Grace was expelled from the project, after staying up till 4 and being very rude and disobedient to the staff. When given the chance to explain her self I understand that she called the Headmaster a 'Black cunt'.

This is the girl that Richard Madley wished well and told her not to be forced to conform. How proud he must be of the little charmer.
