Anyone else's dcs love this?

ds is hooked on it but I love it too - the drawing and colours are lovely and I adore all the different accents for the creatures - French crustaceans / remipedes; Scouse walruses, Geordie lobsters, Welsh starfish. Fabulous.

Ah, you're seeking the independent option, I see. We're still at the "switch it on and walk out" stage. I think I'll delete all the Wibbly Pigs. It'll be a bloodbath.

Both DC's love Octonauts - it is on series link on our Sky+. I find Octonauts are a big help when mealtimes are progressing slowly:

Me: (brandishing fork full of food) Who's going in the Octo-Hatch to get out of the storm?

Child chooses character

Me: sings theme tune whilst pushing food into said Octo-Hatch

Repeat as necessary (there are sufficient number of characters to make real progress with a bowl full of food) :)

Ooooh octonaut games. We've only found the colouring in pages so far. DH and I have been searching - instead we've got DS a playmobil submarine for his birthday in a few weeks time

DS got the whale for christmas, it was a great hit. He really wants that fiddly diver reef things but I resisted as I think all the pieces will be dispersed under the furniture even more quickly than with other playmobil sets

KeepCalmAndHaveAnotherMincePie · 30/12/2010 21:21

DS (2.5) loves it - he calls it 'octopuses' Smile.

Didn't know there were books out so will check them out, thanks.

Riddo · 30/12/2010 21:23

My mindee (nearly 4) is obsessed with the Octonauts. It has inspired all sorts of imaginary games and junk models.

It is also the only thing that keeps him in one place long enough for me to cook the lunch!

hi, not a mum, a dad, with a marine biology degree. octonauts is absolutely epic. youngest son (2 1/2) is absolutely mad for it. eldest son (8 1/2) pretends not to like it, but is glued to it when it comes on (mind you, at that age they're glued to the news, antiques roadshow, darts, open university...).

anyway, other than the obvious flaws (crabs don't talk, there are no scouse walruses, polar bears would eat penguins if they could get the wrappers off) the science is actually spot on. youngest son can recognise animals on documentary programmes from having seen them on oggernorts, eldest son now understands symbiosis (although i had to explain the diffence between facultative and obligate symbiosis - come on chorion, get it together!) daughter (12) has an octonauts ringtone. wife has an octonauts headache.

i've been watching cbeebies (and, lately, cbbc)for about 11 years now, and this is far and away the best kids programme i've ever seen.

dobiegirl · 11/01/2011 19:13

Hi my daughter is the same, she's just gone 4 and Octonauts mad. Bank Holiday Monday we had to go to the sealife centre at Blackpool to see if we could spot Captain Barnacles and his crew swimming round with the fishes and sharks, I spotted Dashi but unfortunately my little one missed seeing her before she flew off on another mission Wink

I've got her the books and managed to get octonauts name plaques for thier bedroom doors reasonably cheap (21 month old loves them too)off ebay, but I can't find any other stuff.

It really is a good educational programme for little ones.

Thandeka · 11/01/2011 19:41

sneaks on to confess that 11 month old doesnt like it but it stays on anyway as I love it.

"Shhh darling mummy is trying to watch cbeebies."

Chaotica · 11/01/2011 20:45

We love octonauts (me and DP included). DD and DS are 3 and 4 and are learning loads.

Aren't the Vegimals weird though? I presume they're supposed to be some animal-plant hybrid.

Chaotica · 11/01/2011 20:48

ishmael - interesting to hear a marine biologists take on it.

Chaotica · 11/01/2011 20:49

oops : marine biologist's take on it

LadyBiscuit · 11/01/2011 20:55

Ooh I'm so pleased to find this thread - I DS loves Octonauts: Explore, Rescue, Protect! :o

We sing the theme tune together and have weeks of episodes recorded on the PVR (my list looks like Alpha's but without the Fashion Police Wink)

He got the Imaginext sub for Xmas because it has a shark face on the front a bit like the Gup B.

Am so glad that it's biologically sound Ishmael - I had never heard of a blobfish but was amazed how similar they looked to the cartoon when I googled!

ishmael · 12/01/2011 13:55

i can only vouch for the science on the tv series mind (and then only the ones i've seen. i've not seen all of them, honestly. really, i haven't...) - we've not got the books. judging by this one here then they're a bit lacking. it looks gorgeous, though.

tried the tip about calling the fork gup-a last night. almost worked. mouth wide open right til the last second. then a big dirty laugh as the mash goes all over the floor!

PigeonPie · 12/01/2011 14:15

We're fans in this house too. Never had DH offering to turn on iPlayer before for DS1 (5) and DS2 (3). It's one of the first new programmes I can stand because it doesn't really dumb down (well apart from talking polar bears etc!)

Great programme with lots of imagination and well put together. Well done BBC!

minigoof · 14/01/2011 13:37

Scouse walruses. Possibly a nod to 'I Am The Walrus', by popular Merseybeat combo 'The Beatles'. They're quite good.
Octonauts is brilliant!

MarniesMummy · 14/01/2011 16:55

My DD 3, loves the Octonauts (or Octomals as she calls them).

She constantly bngs on about them. Her older sisters think it's OK too.

I think as shows go it's ok.
Better that thn Mighty Mites, Bits and Bobs or In the fecking Night Garden!

DirtyMartini · 14/01/2011 22:07

DS (3) now calls DD (9 months) Tunip Grin

strawberrylace · 20/01/2011 16:37

FYI octonauts fans - i have seen on the octonauts facebook page that there will be fisher price toys in argos in july....

bumpybecky · 20/01/2011 16:41

the facebook group is worth joining, there are some fantastic Octonauts cakes, models and home made toys that people have been making :)

angels3 · 21/01/2011 18:43

We love it too - and its amazing what an interest it has sparked in our 5yo to find out a bit more about nature - he loves it and so do we!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 21/01/2011 20:51

I love it but DS is less keen and we hardly have cbeebies on these days, as he's obsessed with his Thomas dvds. Hmm

But what about the radishes with cat faces?? Confused I think I've seen similar little anime veggies in other Japanese contexts - is it just a 'thing'?
