Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon on 'The Trip'

Not sure what I think of this. It doesn't feel quite funny enough and it's not going deep enough imo to justify the potentially more poignant elements. It's so superficial and so unrevealing. But I have really laughed a couple of times.
DH thinks it's terrible but hasn't watched it properly, he's read the bad reviews and assumes they're right.
But there are moments. And it makes me wish there was a real script which could use Coogan's amazing acting. He looks like he could do anything but that there's nothing much to do here somehow. Except sort of constipatedly 'play' an exaggerated version of himself.

I fell asleep - thats how much I enjoyed it!!

Longstocking2 · 16/11/2010 14:08

not funny enough then! I know what you mean, I dropped off twice in the last one.

I watched the first one and thought it was bit crap TBH.

It was as if if it didn't quite know what it was...a bit of docu/bit of sitcom/bit of fly on the wall/bit of drama etc

DP watched it again last night as he reckons it could be a grower Hmm

boogeek · 16/11/2010 14:16

I agree - I didn't hate it but it doesn't know what it is trying to be

Rockbird · 16/11/2010 14:17

Oh. My. God. This is such bad tv. DH is a big fan of both and so he sits there in stitches while I Hmm at him. The pair of them get on my tits.

Longstocking2 · 16/11/2010 14:18

I'll definitely watch it again. I love Rob Brydon so much. And although there just isn't enough for these two to do here, it is mesmerising watching Coogan's face. I think he's a stunning actor, really amazing.

Maybe that's what Winterbottom is trying to do, give Coogan a show case for a bit of stillness and seriousness to show this ability. But it's not enough for a general audience I don't think.

But I'll watch the rest of it I'm sure.

DH is with you Rockbird. He can't get over loads of people having told him that Steve Coogan is really snooty and unpleasant in person.

But I have to forgive them because I think Alan Partridge was such a truly glorious performance and also for Uncle wotsit in Gavin and Stacey Grin they have a long rope from me!

I love it! It's like being out for a meal or in a pub with them.

If I was Mrs Rob Brydon he'd have to speak in the man in a box voice ALL the time. It creases me up

Rockbird · 16/11/2010 14:25

Argh, I have been on countless car journeys with DH and my brother who spend the entire time quoting Alan bloody Partridge! Makes me want to drive into the path of an oncoming juggernaut... :o

NorbertDentressangle · 16/11/2010 14:32

Did anyone see the series where Coogan played an ex-roadie who was now a pest exterminator?

That was quite funny but Alan Partridge is by far his best creation

(Trying to remember the name of it -will come back when I've googled)

I think I quite liked Saxondale as I knew a lot of people in my youth who are probably like that now Grin

PaisleyLeaf · 16/11/2010 14:36

I'm warming to it more each time I see it.

BendyBob · 16/11/2010 14:44

Coogan is brilliant. He knows it too I think which adds to his irritation factor charm but I completely forgive him. He does grotesques with laser precision.

No doubt he is a nightmare to live with but that's not ever going to be my problem.

24hr Party People one of my all time favourite films.

I enjoyed last nights, missed the first one. SC has a house in the lakes and I've met him, whilst having a cig outside a pub.

I think a lot of it is ad lib, forgot how stunning the lakes can look.

NorbertDentressangle · 16/11/2010 16:15

Did anyone see him in a Night at the Museum which was on TV at the weekend?

when you live in the country do you join the WI and bake and grow your own? And skip about in cath kitson aprons? Or is it all taking smack at the bus shelter?!?!?
