as mine just turned 6 and she knows she is not allowed to watch Doctor Who series (adults series) but Sarah Jane Ad is similar to D who and my dd1 said its really good and is not scary. I just thought its a childrens version of D who, till i saw it this afternoon (ive never really watched it properly), there was a Lord Voldemort look-a-like (out of Harry Potter) was on, but worse as it had fangy teeth and no eyes!! eeekkkk!!

It was only cos my mum by chance was visiting and said the SJ adventures is scary and i said "Dont be silly mum, its not!", till i saw it Shock

am i over re-acting for my 6 yrs old??

DD is 10 (actually nearer 11) and loves it, but has been watching Doctor Who since age 6 if not before. Many of the monsters/aliens are the same (I saw some Slitheens earlier this week).

my dses are 7 and almost 10, and love it. It seems to have been on at tea time each day this week, and even though the acting's so hammy they love SJ and co! DD's 4 and hates it!

My 2 are 10 and 7 and DS2 has been watching SJA since he was 5. He doesn't find it scary although he doesn't always like Dr Who but often that was because he didn't follow the story at 5.

DS1 has never been scared of SJA but watched Dr Who first when he was 4 or 5 (and was a little scared) so he was immune to the slightly less scary, slightly slower paced SJA.

Dd 3 is slightly obsessed with SJA, it is on daily in our house! Even managed to get her a sonic lipstick for christmas, as she 'needed one'! :)

Ds is 9 and a bit 'sensitive' so doesn't watch dr who but does watch sja. Dd is 5 and loves sja but is not scared bt anything! Think it totally depends on the child in question to be honest.

ok i must be rubbish as 6 3 and 1 year olds wtach SJA regularly and older 2 were so excited when dr who came on in recent episodes they jumped around and cheered :) I think you are referring to the trickster who regularly gets spotted in our house and shot with imaginary sonic screwdrivers. obviously 1 yr old doesnt watch it really but if it is on he tends to be in the room pottering when the boys are watching it.

I would rather they watched something " scary" like this than swearing/ sex/ people being horrible to each other.

threenoisyboys · 29/10/2010 10:35

also ( serious question) if your 3/4 year olds do not watch dr who etc is that because you yourself dont watch it ? or do they go to bed early? telly tends to be a family affair in our house ( especially on cold saturday nights) so our boys have been watching dr who since they were born ( unless already in bed obviously!)

Yes, I think both Dr Who and SJA have pretty strong moral messages underlying them. There is some telly we won't let them watch - in fact we've recently banned Horrid Henry because it was definitely exacerbating behaviour problems - but broadly the Dr Who / SJA messages are generally ones I am happy with (especially the Dr Who hating guns thing, which I would love my son to pick up )

My ds has watched it for ages, he's currently 5and a half. He sometimes says something's scary so we turn it off or he hides behind us watching it through his fingers. He has all the action figures at his grandparents'. That's their thing that they all do together.
He knows it's not real, but some kids won't be able to make that distinction.
