Is anyone else watching this? It's about the abuse that people with learning difficulties are subject to.

It's by Rosa Monckton who made the excellent 'When A Mother's Love Is Not Enough' documentary.

It's not going to be easy viewing.

Sadly the world is full of scumbags who make themselves feel superior by targeting anyone 'different'.

MollieO · 19/10/2010 23:40

I was hoping they'd say at the end that Guarin and his family had moved. I remember them from her previous documentary and I was incredibly sad to see that rather than their lives improving since then it had got worse.

MissAnneElk · 19/10/2010 23:41

This was incredibly sad. I just can't understand it. I have seen the family from Poole before on television and just don't get why people think it's ok to torment them.
Glad Christopher got the job. Would be great for him if it led to some paying work for him.
Rosa Monckton does seem like a very caring person.

I have just finished watching this and i am in tears. My son Wilf (pics on my profile) is profoundly deaf and has Aspergers Syndrome. We are incredibly lucky in that we live in the polar opposite community to those who were in the programme! Everyone in our village looks out for Wilf so much so that when his support worker started a month ago i had to tell people not to panic if they saw Wilf with a strange man! I am so aware of how lucky we are! Not to say we havent had problems. Wilf came charging up to me one day waving his arms and being vvery loud. A lady looked at him over her glasses ansd manhandled her husband out of the way like Wilf was contagious and said " Come along dear!" They both looked very embarassed by Wilf. Sad I looked at her quite calmly and replied "hes quite nice actually if you take the time and trouble to find out , oh and he wont hurt you!!!" God Bless Rosa Monckton! She is an amazing lady and a super Mummy!!

silverfrog · 19/10/2010 23:44

I had to turn it off.

Just too close to home, and it terrified me to think.of dd1 growing up in a world where this is thought, by anyone, to be acceptable behaviour

LetThereBeRock · 19/10/2010 23:49

Wilf's such a handsome young man,and a very sporty one too I see.Grin

It's wonderful to hear that there's so much support in your community, that it doesn't have to be as it was depicted in the documentary.
I wish everyone with sn or a child with sn could have that same support.

LTBR: "What did Christopher say, that made Rosa reply 'You don't really mean that'? I missed it."

He said he had looked at the Exit website because sometimes he thought he couldn't bear living another 20 years filled with abuse. (I paraphrase.)

LetThereBeRock · 20/10/2010 00:05

Thankyou.I can't find the appropriate words to express how sad it is that people can make him feel so awful that he'd consider that.

Bully's are the disabled ones, dis-able to be human. Name and shame them big time. Chris your really cool, keep being you cause your fab.

Toffeefudgecake · 20/10/2010 00:21

Lottie - thank you for mentioning this on the petition thread. I'm so glad I watched it, even though it was incredibly upsetting viewing. I am appalled that people think it is OK to treat such vulnerable people with so much contempt. They have no compassion and no sense of shame. It is frightening.

maxybrown · 20/10/2010 07:27

Lottie - Wilf looks full of mischief and fun on every picture! lovely Smile

maxybrown · 20/10/2010 07:28

Oh and love his name too!

lottiejenkins · 20/10/2010 07:30

Thanks for the comments guys. I think i might try and contact RM and let her know that there are some areas where there is support for Learning disabled people!!

nikos · 20/10/2010 07:38

Think it would be a brilliant idea to do a follow up programme to this where positive experiences like Wilf's are shown - both in communities and employers. To show that it really doesn't take a great deal of effort but does take a little to make these things work.
Many of us on here know the isolation having a sn child can bring. Can you imagine having the isolation and violence against you as well. Sad

lottiejenkins · 20/10/2010 08:32

Rosa's homepage
I have written an email to her outlining what i said here about Wilf and suggesting she did a programme about the positives too!!
I attached the newspaper article that was done on us earlier this year too!!

lottiejenkins · 20/10/2010 21:47

Ive just had an email from Rosa. She thanked me for my email and said she would carry on fighting!!

shabbadabbadingdong · 20/10/2010 22:57
