nigella's new show

Was it just me? I thought both her "pizza" and her fajita's looked and sounded a bit gross and pretty bland. I am not some cordon bleu chef, but I want my cookery shows to demonstrate food that are in some way aspirational. Every day, yes (Jamie and Nigel do fab stuff which immediately make you hungry), but this show (and I do normally like Nigella) was just like me on an uninspired Saturday night wondering what to knock up.

Oh dear - that thing with the bourbon biscuits and melted marshmallows... I know she can actually cook so why doesn't she? It somehow all feels very patronising now.

Hulababy · 14/10/2010 20:58

I quite fancied the cheesecake!

Have to say that I did prefer last week's food though.

MollieO · 14/10/2010 21:06

I watched it tonight and then turned over to watch H F-W. What a contrast. Nigella just looked like food porn - all those close ups of her eating leftovers - whereas Hugh actually taught me something about cooking.

IAmBackDidYouMissMe · 15/10/2010 19:57

Oh I am so sad about Nigella and disappointed.

SkippyjonJones · 15/10/2010 20:05

I don't think it is her fault. She is still lovely, the production team just got to her and told her to glam it all up. You can tell she feels uncomfortable about it.

Marmite spaghetti

You're not exactly getting any of your "five a day" eating that are you and are certainly getting more that enough saturated fats.

tamianka · 16/10/2010 18:43

Hmmm, love nigella but, sad to say it, finding this series a little uncomfortable to watch. On the one hand recipes have become so approachable that they are more serving suggestions than actual recipes. Then on the other hand her constant reference to greed as inspiration and undermining herself by talking about her greed makes me think she's over compensating for possibly feeling a little self conscious over her weight. She looks gorgeous but you notice all the time she wears dark skirts (no trousers, which speaking from experience says you hate your legs) and often a long sleeved jacket which most of us would take off straight away when indoors but she cooks in it. I wouldn't think of it unless after reading three times from her magazine articles to promote her book that she doesn't see life worth living if you worry about what you're eating and your weight. Methinks the lady doth protest too much...

tamianka - I agree with you. As someone recovering from a binge eating disorder I do find it uncomfortable to watch. She is an emotional eater, and I'm not sure that's a healthy message to be promoting. Her food is always so stodgy and lacking in vegetables, as opposed to someone like Jamie Oliver who always cooks very fresh looking food.

lizziemun · 20/10/2010 13:29

I agree she her food is always stodgy and a lack of veg on the plate.

But aside from that I don't think it's a 'cookery' progamme more advert for pouting and poncing around with her friends.

bakesalot · 21/10/2010 13:27

Spaghetti with marmite? Oh dear, Nigella has lost the plot I think. Always been a big fan, have lots of the books and make lots of her recipes but definitely wont be buying Kitchen. The TV series is unwatchable as well. Who wants to watch her apply lipstick, ride in taxis, gloat over her well stocked larder which is the size of a small corner shop and socialise with her 'friends' who look half her age. I'm watching Jamie and loving his recipes from his new series but I just hope Nigella the day comes when Nigella 'gets real' again. OK, that's off my chest, off to make Jamie's Peri-Peri chicken now.

jenk1 · 21/10/2010 20:09

anyone watching!

MrsDinky · 21/10/2010 21:20

I have just watched TV Burp recorded at the weekend with Nigella's Top 10 Innuendos, PMSL....

MakemineaGandT · 21/10/2010 21:24

It's such a shame - her early books were fantastic. Her latest offerings are just embarrassing. What is going on Nigella?!

evenkeel · 22/10/2010 15:25

Couldn't agree more, Makemine. Something's gone seriously awry.

BTW, does anyone remember her ill-fated, short-lived (very) foray into chatshow territory, a few years ago? The spectacle of her trying to 'chat' sexily to Val Kilmer while rustling up her lemon linguine, or some such tomfoolery, was the most mesmerisingly gruesome thing I think I've ever seen on TV. And believe me, that's saying a lot. I kept expecting the camera to pan round to the studio audience (they actually had a live audience!) to reveal everyone sitting with jaws silently dropped, a la The Producers

Maria2007loveshersleep · 29/10/2010 20:24

I have to admit the recipes in this show are not to her usual standard. They belong to 'Nigella Express' territory; I would like something slow-cooked for a change.

Also, I do think she's overdoing it with the pouting & sexing-it-up.

Disappointed, even though the recipes I've tried from the actual Kitchen book do seem to work (except the blondies which were hugely undercooked inside when I took them out of the oven & overcooked on top).
