Hello. Does anyone have a view on whether Tom and Jerry and Roadrunner and Coyote style cartoons are still entertaining for children and what it is they like about them? Thanks

I'm not sure if they're too violent, or if it's actually funny. I kind of like the slapstick element though and my kids love them but I'm just not sure. What do you think?

You know, if you're writing an article, I suspect people would be a lot more forthcoming if you were honest about it rather than quite obviously Not Mentioning It....

Okay, thanks. I'm new to this and don't quite know how it the topic thing works to be honest. I'm not actually writing an article, but it is for a homework assignment Blush...

My kids love tom and jerry, my 6 year old is watching right now

DD (7) hasn't watched any of these although she is aware their names are Tom and Jerry.

You'll see from the Sky schedules if they are still available.

Of the classic cartoon that I watched as a youngster the only one that still captures DD's imagination is Scooby Do. I now realise it is formulaic but DD loves the thrill and suspense.

Thank you, the thrill and suspense aspect is quite interesting as it the formulaic component - it seems like children like repetition so that they can understand new things each time they watch it. As for Tom and Jerry, my children like the complete unatomical distortion (eg. when Tom is hit over the head with an anvil his head is anvil shaped)and the constant mishaps. I do have a fundamental concern though whether it's too violent or if I'm being too oversensitve. Also, as it's not overly educational do you think there's still a market for this type of comedy? I guess getting to the crux of the assignment if there was a new type of cartoon with the same formula, would you let your kids watch it and do you think they'd enjoy it? Thanks again.

We think there is to much Japanese style animation which may be popular with older kids but leaves DD (and us as parents) cold.

She has loved the claymation (Roary, Fifi etc) when she was a little younger but now wants more excitement in a cartoon.

However Peppa Pig is still considered by us all to be the modern classic - mainly as the script is so tight and humerous and we can all relate to their family dynamic.

ds(9) absolutely loves tom and jerry, definitely the slapstick element - i think its the extreme emotion thing too

i think we can be too earnest and try to find fault with these cartoon, even though we didn't all grow up being pyschos.

he loves all looney tunes and will watch them over ben 10 and the like

vouvray · 27/09/2010 21:33

Actually good points - I wonder if we're all a bit overworried and maybe kids (and adults) just need a bit of plain funny.

DS (nearly 6) loves these kind of slapstick cartoons, although he doesn't watch them all that often. I don't think they are too violent.
