I thought they seemed rather nice. They all embraced the trip, were always very cordial and respectful and seemed to get a lot out of it.

I think it was amazing for the kids, they could so easiliy have spent the money on a few weeks in the Maldives instead.

I'm used to roughing it and would have struggled with half they experienced. Not sure the bitchfest was really warranted.

Would have given my kids anti-maleria tablets though.

Funny how the tribe who you were led to believe had never encountered westerners all shook their hands and gave them a thumbs up? Turns out they'd had plenty of contact with other westerners - it was just they'd never actually met a western family. Thanks for making that clear channel 4.

We saw 2 weeks in Mongolia and 2 weeks (plus a bit of the travel) in Papua New Guinea..

Out of 12 months? Where else did they did they live with the locals and got back to basics?

I saw they had 3 weeks R&R and did the 'tourist' bit.

Acekicker · 07/09/2010 10:29

They didn't ever really say where they were staying on the tourist bits that they (as Channel 4 constantly told us) 'filmed themselves'...

...I got out my 'Sunday Best' judgey pants at the point at which the mother flapped around and ran off when they killed the sheep. Stupid bint - apparently her getting her children out of their 'privileged cocoon' and wanting them to see where meat comes from didn't apply to her. I suspect (although I know feck all about Mongolian Nomads) that it's also the height of bad manners to run screaming out of your tent when they bring breakfast in!

I did love the girl teaching all the rain-forest kids skipping though.

As for not taking anti-malarials in the rain-forest - FFS! The worst kind of western arrogance to think that you won't succumb to something that kills thousands every day...

Can't wait for next week's episode...

I did find myself thinking that the programme glossed over a lot of things

-the family were away for a year and this was edited into a mere 1 hour programme -surely their experiences warranted more than this? Or was it because the rest of the time they were doing the touristy/hotel thing and this wasn't the impression the programme makers wanted to give?

-any negatives were brushed aside quickly eg. the car crash -surely if your children are in a vehicle that leaves the road and rolls twice in that sort of environment then you, as a parent, would be quite affected by that. Similarly, if you've chosen not to vaccinate your children and they show any sign of illness when you're away then wouldn't you be soul-searching about whether you've done the right thing? I'm not saying that I want to see the parents suffering but I do think the programme needed to give a more balanced look at their experiences rather than the rose-tinted portrayal we saw.

The brief clip for next week did suggest that it might not be quite as rosy for that family though.

Well u can all shut up what the bloody hell do you know ur all prob just jealous you dont have then money to do it.. or the balls...

That is in fact MY FAMILY im an older son from Mr's first wife n i dont see them much as we dont get on but u lot dont know what ur talking about...

U cant just go out there with no plan, no structure no real aims..

Yes Mrs runs calls the shots.. what Mrs doesnt.. the point for the trip was to educated, teach and enlighten the children which has clearly worked...

U all obviosuly have such interesting lives you have nothing better to do than shit on the web and slag off people that are more fortunate that you..... VERY SAD

No anti-malarials is very risky, don't you think?

CrispyTheCrisp · 07/09/2010 19:16

I see the private education worked well then HmmGrin

NorbertDentressangle · 07/09/2010 19:48

Calm down, calm down Rory

I think you'll find that some of the criticisms were of the programme itself (the editing, what they showed/didn't show) not of the family.

Surely you have to admit though that not vaccinating was an...er...unusual decision considering the areas they were visiting?

omnishambles · 07/09/2010 20:14

I know its really horrid when people are discussing your family in such an offhand way but I'm afraid thats what you invite when you go on telly on this sort of show.

Good that you're sticking up for them even though you dont get on though.
