At what age did your DC start watching DR Who?

DS loves aliens and time machines and suchlike but has never seen Dr Who. He's now becoming aware of it through friends, comics etc and he'd love it, but I'm not sure if he's old enough - he's 5. He does well with most U/PG films and isn't easily scared, he likes Horrible Histories and so on. But DP is worried he'll have nightmares. Do you think it's too scary for 5?

My ds2 was 4 when it first came back with Chris Eccleston. There were a couple of episodes that he had to hide his eyes (still does sometimes!) but never had nightmares. I'm sure it depends on the child.

HeavenForfend · 29/08/2010 10:30

Has he seen any of the Sarah Jane Adventures?

They're a little milder than Dr Who, but still with some scary moments. Perhaps watching a couple of those would give you an idea of his scary-monster-tolerance level.

MarineIguana · 29/08/2010 10:32

Yes, he watches Sarah-Jane adventures. I think he's ready! I'm keen to find out if other people's 5yos are watching it though, so as to reassure DP.

I think he should be fine then - lots of dd2's friends in Reception were watching the last series - not that I'd know if they had nightmares or anything, but they all seemed quite keen.

(Dd2 is v nightmare-prone and won't watch Horrible Histories, so we've been sky plussing and watching after bedtime.)

onimolap · 29/08/2010 10:37

Since the first David Tennant Christmas episode in 2005, when DS was 5 and DD 18mths. They both love it!

mejon · 29/08/2010 11:10

DD has been watching it since the most recent series. She was 3.6ish and loves it. She has also seen the 'old' Dr Whos that DH has on DVD/download. No problems with nightmares or being scared.

MarineIguana · 29/08/2010 11:16

Thanks for all the responses. Feeling we've been a bit pfb about it now! :)

I don't think you have been pfb. Children freak out at different things. But Dr Who does have a special place in " scaring children back to behind the sofa where they belong". Sort of cosy and scary and traditional all at the same time.

Tikkabillajive · 29/08/2010 11:26

There's no way I'd let my 5yo dd watch it yet - I find it scary enough myself!

superdragonmama · 29/08/2010 11:31

You can't predict what kids will find scary. My youngest DS, aged about 8/9, loved the David Tennant DrW series - all the wierd monsters and scary cybermen - but was completely freaked out by episode called 'Blink' about statues that moved.

He's never watched another episode since Shock

dolphin13 · 29/08/2010 14:52

Mine was 5 he's now 10 and still obsessed.

Northumberlandlass · 29/08/2010 15:11

My DS was 5 when he started watching it. We didn't watch it just before bed though, we recorded it and watched it on the Sunday morning.

I also would sensor which ones he watched. He didn't watch Blink the first time around also I didn't let him watch the "Are you my Mummy?" one for quite a while.

DS now 7 just LOVES it !!! In fact we are going to the Dr Who Exhibition for his birthday party.

From birth in the case of DS3!

compo · 29/08/2010 15:16

My nearly four yr old dd loves it, she watches it with her dad and six yr old brother
no nightmares yet

lazarusb · 30/08/2010 11:42

My ds is 7 but still occasionally finds episodes scary.

prettybird · 30/08/2010 11:56

Ds was 4.5 when he started watching (he'll be 10 next week) and he loves it.

He was less frightened than me! Blush He was scared by the Blink episode (but nothing compared to how scared I was Grin) but it didn't put him off watching.

We watch it as a family, so we would always have got a sense of how he was reacting.

Alambil · 30/08/2010 20:22

ds is 7 and I'm 27 and it's too terrifying for us...

schroeder · 30/08/2010 20:59

My ds was about 9 when we first let him watch it. At 5 though he had nightmares about the power rangers and scooby doo.

It probably varies a great deal, but I do think 5 really is too young, sorry I know that's not what you want to hear.

Giddyup · 31/08/2010 23:07

DS has been watching it since he was 5, it is a bit scary...but I don't mind that. I hate the violent bits more. The only one that really freaked him out was 'The waters of Mars', it did me too to be honest

MrsMadWriggle · 01/09/2010 01:05

About 5 or 6. Had to be handheld through a few episodes.

Absolutely obsessed by it now at 8. In fact, I managed to get him into an art gallery recently on the pretext that it had Van Goghs - like in Dr Who.

paisleyleaf · 01/09/2010 01:21

DD's coming up to 6 and it would be way too scary for her. But it depends on the child.

noeyedear · 01/09/2010 21:55

I think it does depend on the child. I let my DS watch Finding Nemo nd he was very upset by bits of it- from memory I think the sharks- but he's watched some doctor who's and has nt been scared at all! I don't think he knows whats going on. He loves pretending to be a monster and roaring around the place

themachinist · 02/09/2010 14:11

Erm... (bad mummy) quite recently - 3.6!

He loves it, and though some of my friends think it is not suitable he seems totally unphased.

I sometimes ask him if he thinks its scary, and he looks at me as if I am stupid saying "Its just pretend Mummmy". No nightmares ever, so am (mostly) comfortable that for him it is fine.

Other children his age have been scared at very anodyne Disney's though, so all different.

deaddei · 02/09/2010 14:14

Mine don't like it- just not into it.
Is it not over the heads of young children- or do they just like the scary bits?
