Is anyone else watching this?

Yes.

The scene of the younger brother George helping him get undressed and into bed made me sob. I have two boys and seeing the love between these two has made me rather emotional. The mother should be very proud of having two wonderful sons.

It was very sweet, and yes she certainly should be.

I think the Mum seems very detatched. She keeps going on about getting him back to how he used to be rather than accepting that he may not ever be the same.

LetThereBeRock · 25/08/2010 21:32

It'd be incredibly difficult to accept that he may never be the same again.
Denial is common when one is grieving is it not?

I think it must be a good thing to focus on helping him improve as much as possible.

My 2nd cousin was paralysed and discharged himself from any treatment. Twenty years on he really regrets that no one pushed him harder to get treatment.

Heartbreaking how 5 seconds have changed his life forever. His little brother is lovely.

I'm finding this really hard to watch- my brother had an accident a few years ago (like this boy, young, drunk and thought he was invincible) and ended up with a rather nasty head injury.

Luckily he's more or less fine now- he's lost his sense of taste and smell, but that's nothing compared to what could have happened-at one point we didn't know if he'd wake up, let alone recover.

I think his mum being so detatched is just her way of coping- how do you accept that the child you knew will possibly never come back?

They seem a lovely family. I have three sons and can relate to the boys.

A friend of mine suffered a similar injury 20something years ago when we were at university (pedestrian hit by a drunk driver). He suffered terrible injuries and a complete personality change - but is now at peace with what happened and has a family and a job. He never finished his degree (something that affected him emotionally for many years) and life changed, but thank God he made it through.

That was one of the most moving programmes I've seen. It eloquently illustrated the point made by many recently on MN that we are all maybe just one small step away from either having or caring for someone with additional needs and how difficult that can be.
