I have no problem buying food that's not perfect, I am miffed that the BBC has spent money producing this programme. Do you lot only want perfect food?

hell no, I have an allotment Grin

It does make me sad in supermarkets that small, misshapen and knobbly is always the ''bargain range'' It all tstes the same, people!

Saltire · 25/08/2010 21:10

Surely though, chefs are the biggest culprits for wasting food?

I don't mind mishapen food

southeastastra · 25/08/2010 21:11

i don't buy it bruised

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:12

God, this programme is really annoying me!! Angry
They are going through shop bins, supermarket bins etc to show us how to make a meal out of food scraps!! ARGH!!!!!!!!

Saltire, actually chefs waste very little food (DH is a chef. Most chefs get a profit related bonus so wasted food means less pay. I have known chefs to be sacked for not reaching their targets.

I am not watching the programme as I really can't stand being preached at.

Saltire · 25/08/2010 21:19

Really? It's jsut I've seen BIL at work in his restaurant, and he threw loads out

Saltire · 25/08/2010 21:19

Sorry, said restaurant, he doens't it, he's the chefGrin

TheCrackFox · 25/08/2010 21:20

He really shouldn't be throwing much out - it can be turned into staff food if he is really desperate.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:21

Now they are complaing that a farm (somewhere) composts 30k of lettuce (no idea how to spell this) away because they are miss shapen. ARGH!! No body asked us if we want to buy them or not!! I can't stand the preaching, I may have to throw the laptop at the TV (or turn it over)

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:21

Can't they send excess food to homeless shelters?

OP posts:
Saltire · 25/08/2010 21:23

belle - I've just said the same thing to DH "no one asked the general public if we object to mis-shapen food"

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:24

It all ends up being chopped up, this is just stupid!

I'd buy bashed and miss shapened food.

TheCrackFox · 25/08/2010 21:25

Actually the EU should take some of the blame for the waste (and no, I haven't been reading too much DAily Mail). One of DHs supplier is not allowed to sell mishapen eggs, not even to bakers etc. He leaves them outside his farm for the locals to help themselves too. On a countrywide basis the waste of this alone is sinful.

Doodleydoo · 25/08/2010 21:25

Are you watching the bit about the lettuce - ffs uniform lettuce - supermarkets are the ones to blame!

Habbibu · 25/08/2010 21:25

If you go to supermarkets in Italy (say) the food is all kinds of shapes and colours, but tastes and smells wonderful. Happy to buy misshapes, and think it's ludicrous to throw this stuff out.

StealthPolarBear · 25/08/2010 21:27

I have no problem with misshapen vegetables (in fact didn't Esther Rantzen make a career out of it?) but I tend to find that the supermarket value stuff goes off faster then the normal range. No idea why.

poshwellies · 25/08/2010 21:34

We have an allotment so do not do conformed vegetables.

Can I just say Matt Tebbutt ...MMMMMMMMMM Blush

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:37

Grin There needs to be a national campaign to make the shops and supermarkets sell misshapes, they deserve a home aswell (sobs) This has to be the next mumsnet campaign!

My veg is delivered by a man that grows it himself on his farm, misshapen is fine by me.

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 25/08/2010 21:38

it is quite disgusting how much is thrown out, I'll have to watch this on iplayer.

we get stuff like basics carrots, bit hard to peel when they're forked in two but who cares!

pebblejones · 25/08/2010 21:39

What baffles me is what is the point of this programme, do they want us to rummage in bins? Supermarkets don't sell mishapen foods, they rarely sell bruised foods. I'm not convinced it's the general consumers fault. These producers are saying we can't sell this mishapen lettuce, but they are not selling them to us, they are selling them to the supermarket! And don't get me started on EU and bent cucumbers!

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:40

Turn them into carrot and coriander soup, you don't need to peel them, just give them a scrub. Smile

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:41

That's what's annoying me pebble!

OP posts:
FromGirders · 25/08/2010 21:47

Supermarket quality standards are based on eu legislation. For example, strawberries have a maximum and minimum size, a percentage of the fruit which can be misshapen, under or over-ripe, bruised, water-marked or in any other way damaged. If you try to sell below-quality produce, even in the wholesale market, you'd have trading standards and eu inspectors down on you like a ton of bricks.
Supermarkets set higher quality levels though, for aesthetic reasons, and so that it's not just food, it's m & s food.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 25/08/2010 21:50

Why throw it away? Why not donate it to womens refuges or homeless shelters? If the noggins at the EU say they can't sell it then why not give it to people in need?

OP posts:
poshwellies · 25/08/2010 21:52

Both dh and I said, take the cameras away from this programme and if it was joe public rummaging around in bins, behind supermarkets you'd be yelled at to get off the premises, this programme is bullshit.

Let's all try our local butchers, greengrocers, fruitfarms and see if we get something for nothing Hmm

I do know that M&S used to donate nearly out of date food to our local homeless shelter, good on them.
