Oooh ME - I am becoming increasingly taken with their lifestyle the older I get.

passionberry · 15/08/2010 21:30

It looks lovely! Think it's also because I'd love to visit that part of the world.

Is there somewhere we can sign up!?

DuelingFanjo · 15/08/2010 21:31

it looks lovely but there's no way I could wear those dresses.

Aitch · 15/08/2010 21:32

they were supercool, weren't they?

SagacityNell · 15/08/2010 21:32

The simplicty of heir lives has been inspirational actually. Not the religious side-for me. but the way that they rely mostly on what they can provide for themselves.

Grockle · 15/08/2010 21:35

I can't watch this because I'm overseas atm but can someone tell me where these Amish people are from?

thisisyesterday · 15/08/2010 21:36

i DID

but i don't like the harsh punishments for children, or the fact that the woman is basically her husband's servant.

love all the aspects like being self-sufficient and so community minded tho

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/08/2010 21:42

I loved this series - I did go through Pennsylvania Dutch country when i stayed in Gettysburg in my twenties and saw the Amish around town.

passionberry · 15/08/2010 21:43

Yeah it's the self sufficient aspect that I like I think. It must be a very secure "safe" lifestyle - like being in a bubble. They are so closed off from the world.

OP posts:
passionberry · 15/08/2010 21:44

Oooh I'd love to go there MaryAnnSingleton

i bet it's really not half as fun as it looks

expatinscotland · 15/08/2010 21:47

I would like to buy one of their quilts.

MerryMarigold · 15/08/2010 21:48

Oh no. I missed it. Hope it's on catch up!

toddlerama · 15/08/2010 21:50

I reckon it's harder than it looks. Not all quilting and wafting about in a floor length dress. Hard farmwork and no washing machine? I'm deeply suspicious of their smiles...

brimfull · 15/08/2010 21:54

there is an Amish community near my parents in Canada and a Mennonite one which is very similar
doesn't appeal at all to me

they sell their quilts at the local market
they are mega expensive

expatinscotland · 15/08/2010 21:56

If I made a quilt by hand, I'd charge a king's ransom for it!

Grockle · 15/08/2010 22:08

So are these teenagers from Pennsylvania?

MrsBadger · 15/08/2010 22:10

no they're from the midwest
more here

My pal lives in Philly and there is a big AMish community - we went for a day out to Philadelphia zoo and saw some Amish people there. Fascinating

luciemule · 15/08/2010 22:34

I have had a big interest in the Amish lifestyle for a few years now and loved this series. Some bits, like tonight when they were taken to a nightclub, made me squirm; knowing that that was going completely against what they believed or knew.

If you haven't read it yet, 'Plain Truth' the novel by Jodie Picoult gives a very realistic representation about Amish life.

I think the worlkd be be almost eutopic if we all lived a bit more like the Amish......however, I'm atheist so the religious bit goes completely what I believe in. The rest if it though, I could quite get used to.......oh, and not the bowl haircuts either Grin.

luciemule · 15/08/2010 22:35

QOD - you made it sound like the Amish people were in the zoo Grin!

"we went for a day out to Philadelphia zoo and saw some Amish people there."

SpeedyGonzalez · 15/08/2010 22:38

I saw ep 1 and have recorded the rest. What I loved was the way they weren't judgmental (ahem - have just started a judgy thread) and were so open to learning from the Brit youths. What lovely (if slightly too nice) people.

diddl · 15/08/2010 22:40

I think for me it would also wear a bit thin.

Afterall, you don´t have to live a hedonistic lifestyle just because you´re not Amish!

But the whole submissive woman would get me.

When she (Becky) was saying "helpmeet"- I thought yes, helper & mate, not servant!

I guess most stay in the community-afterall, they are educated by their own until only 14-what else can they do?

If they want to leave, would their parents pay to put them through college or anything or disown them?

kayah · 15/08/2010 22:48

I think all teenangers are encouraged to go outside Amish community and experience life for themselves.
I am not sure that parents would help them financially to cut off their roots though. But not every kid has a help of the family when puting themselfes through college/uni...
