ON CHANNEL 4 TONIGHT

21:00 Kids Behind Bars

Because of my current job I think this may be quite interesting. Not seen any more info or trialers for it yet though.

Chilling. This girl has no remorse at all for having assaulted and injured people.

Hulababy · 25/08/2005 21:37

None of them have had any remorse so far - HOW do you stop the cycle?

OP posts:
Nbg · 25/08/2005 21:39

Have just switched it on.

Will be dealing with a violent girl tomorrow. Not looking forward to it.

Hulababy · 25/08/2005 21:40

Where I work we get them from age 17 onwards. Same kids, but when they've moved on to a YOI.

OP posts:
Nbg · 25/08/2005 21:44

Eeek! Thats a bit older than what I normally deal with. Eldest I've had is 16.
The kids are always petrified of YOI's. Not enough to stop them going out and re-offending though

expatinscotland · 25/08/2005 21:45

These two laddies find it all very amusing.

Hulababy · 25/08/2005 21:49

I get lads who have come from this last unit - the serious ones and the lifers.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 25/08/2005 21:49

Where I am is much different for the YOs than here. We are 50% YOi and 50% HMP - so they get more of a proper prison regime than a YO one.

might be a bit off course, but id like to see a documentary/programme about how visiting prisoners affects family members.

RTKangaMummy · 25/08/2005 21:52

it is the fact that they all think it is funny and clever that gets me

My eldest nephew was mugged at knife point in middle of day for his phone {a really cheap one} He was really frightened

BadHair · 25/08/2005 22:09

Dp watching it. Most of them are similar to the kids he works with. Though some of his have done far worse. It's depressing and very, very sad.

Hulababy · 25/08/2005 22:17

It's very sad. And you are right badhair - some of the children inside have committed far far worse. When you read through their records some of it is awful. And some have so many crimes even at such young ages.

I have noticed whilst working that it is often the lifers and those with the most serious crimes that come across as being the nicer people who are more liekly to show remorse and have a chance of not reoffending. I hope so anyway.

Did you also notice that pretty much all of them came from unusual family backgrounds. Nothing seemed straight forward. Not excusing behaviours but wondering what triggers kids to offend in such ways.

But what is the answer? How do we stop this children offending and reoffending?

Damn... forgot

chloe55 · 26/08/2005 09:08

It's very sad that most of these kids are well aware that they will get out, reoffend and start the cycle again and are perfectly happy with that.

The 2 boys who set fire to that other lad just shocked me - how did it ever get there far?

As for the lad who came back in and thought it was 'cool' - arrrgghh It's the no remorse from any of them that p*sses me off! How would they feel if they got beaten up/threatened with weapons/had sentimental things stolen from them?!

Hulababy · 26/08/2005 09:38

"The 2 boys who set fire to that other lad just shocked me - how did it ever get there far? "

Drugs and alcohol.

So many of them used drugs from such an early age.

Too true Hulababy. I'm 24 and can hand on heart say I have never touched a class A/B drug however, EVERYONE I grew up with have and did on a regular basis. I am not from a rough area/have a good relationship with my mother/went to a well reputable school etc etc - as did all my friends. My husband thinks I am naive to think that when our children grow up they might not touch drugs and to be honest part of me knows he is right which is very sad.

Saying that I'm hoping E's/Speed are becoming 'old fashioned' but I guess cocaine is now taking their place.

When reading reports at work and when sentence planning drugs and alcohol are so often brought up as issues to address. It is actually less common for me NOT to suggest drugs ed courses that to suggest it.
