Who is watching this?? I have it on record, can't wait to see it, I find looking at the different ways people live their lives rather fascinating!

Poshwellies · 25/07/2010 20:46

agree,really interesting!

CheeryCherry · 25/07/2010 20:47

Have half an eye on it, they have picked nice British kids so far, even if the tales of rapes/stabbings seemed a bit OTT. Do the Brits go over there?

sailorsgal · 25/07/2010 20:56

Funny how the boys have been led astray already.

Doubt many of them will be going back tbh!

Alambil · 25/07/2010 21:07

just watching it now - I'd LOVE to spend time with an Amish community

Alambil · 25/07/2010 21:08

I hate the title of the programme though - they aren't square - they're just different!

CaptainKirksNipples · 25/07/2010 21:12

Loving the amish kicking ass at rounders!

stillbobbysgirl · 25/07/2010 21:13

I have visited Amish areas in NJ and they certainly have a very interesting lifestyle! They pay taxes but do not vote and are excempt from military service. They will not have thier photo taken and do not use zips ot buttons on clothing - the women pin themselves into their pinifores.

They are a dwindling population as the young people are leaving in thier droves.

Rockbird · 25/07/2010 21:14

I'm amazed they were allowed to go as well. Although to be fair, the Londoners aren't really selling their lifestyle well! I'd head back to (missed the very beginning) wherever they're from pretty sharpish.

Itsjustafleshwound · 25/07/2010 21:21

Is it the Amish parents who allow their teenagers a year in the 'wide world' and at the end of the year the teenager decides if he/she wantsto continue to live in the community and shun the modern world or decide to stay in the modern world and be evicted from the community??

Doesn't sound like it. Did a visit to London really have to include a tour of the sex shops? Is that the best of London they could show them?

I found it really interesting. The English kids were lovely. I'd love an 'Amish holiday' to see what it's like

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2010 22:09

Fascinating - I think both sets of teens really did themselves proud in their acceptance and interest in each other.

phoenixflower · 26/07/2010 07:52

Show was really good. Would have liked to have seen more of their amish way of life and their community. Maybe that will come in later episodes!

That lad who has been on his 'break' from the amish way of life seems unlikely to want to go back to it imo... esp. after the clips of next week with the drinking, smoking etc!

I missed most of it but the bit I saw was interesting.

I wonder if they lived each others lives "properly" iyswim, who would find it easier to adapt?

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/07/2010 09:56

I really liekd this programme - the subtitle 'world's squarest teenagers' was a bit daft though.

Very good commentary (think it helped that the Amish themselves commentated so there was no 'sneering').

Both sets of teenagers really did themselves proud. What a nice bunch of kids they were.

Makes a change from the 'shock horror lets manipulate the subjects and twist everything' type of documentaries usual today.

wrinklyraisin · 26/07/2010 11:56

I thought it was great. Nice to see a positive show about teenagers, both the British ones and the Amish. There was a lot of mutual interest and respect and it was really fascinating to hear each of their views on things.

OliviaMumsnet · 26/07/2010 12:08

ooh sounds interesting
is this on iplayer anywhere?

roisin · 26/07/2010 12:41

here you go Olivia

usualsuspect · 26/07/2010 12:44

Next weeks looks interesting

I found myself really envying some of the Amish peoples' lifestyle. The community spirit, eg all sitting sewing a quilt together and singing as they did it, the safety, the great work ethic, the time spent outdoors. They certainly get a lot of things right.

But then when I saw that they don't dance or perform and consider any sexual feelings sinful, and finish their education at 14 I felt enormously sad for them. They are missing out on so much joy. I wish we could encorporate some of their lifestyle into ours and at the same time help them see that sex and dancing and learning are great.

I agreed that it was pretty silly taking them to Soho to show them sex shops. How many teenagers lives involve those? I wanted them to stay with some university students and maybe some teens out in the country who don't live in grim estates and deal with gang related deaths. But that maybe that is still to come.
