Im pretty sure that I was already registered but I've done it again just to be sure.

Fio2 · 22/08/2005 17:16

not sure I can watch, but well done potty for raising awareness

spursmum · 22/08/2005 17:19

Ahhh thank you potty but it really comes from having known misdee and hubby for close to 15 years now(separately of course).

QueenOfQuotes · 22/08/2005 17:20

I registered a month or so ago - well I think I did - don't remember receiving any confirmation of any sorts - should I have done???

I also persauded DH this morning to agree to donate his organs too (not much organ donation goes on in Zim so still a pretty 'alien' thing for him).

potty1 · 22/08/2005 17:27

Today is Monday 22 August 2005

Since 1 April 2005

912 people have received transplants
319 people have donated organs
6,287 people are still waiting for transplants

Fio - I understand.

QoQ - well done to your dh too.

Transplants save lives
In the UK between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2005:

A total of 1,783 received a kidney transplant of which 475 (27%) were given their kidney by a friend or relative - the highest number of living kidney transplants ever recorded in the UK
The figures also include a record number of kidney transplants from non-heartbeating donors - 143, 20% up on the previous year
Organs from 752 people who died were used to save or dramatically improve many people's lives through 2,242 transplants
A further 2,375 people had their sight restored through a cornea transplant - the highest number for eight years
86 people received a pancreas or combined kidney/pancreas transplant - the highest number on record
A million more people pledged to help others after their death by registering their wishes on the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Man featured on first prog had DCM - like our Peters misdee. This is man I refered to on the cardio chat thread (which no-one seems to have read )

Funny watching this. Know the transplant co-ordinators at papworth well, have had 'The Talk' and recognised all the waiting rooms, nursing staff etc. Wierd, but hope it gives you confidence, as you can see how professional, caring and committed they all are.

Thought it was funny to see the man all bright-eyed on adrenaline waiting for his op, while his wife looked absolutely knackered. That's how it is, they just lie there for 4hrs or so while we have to worry and wait and get woken up with updates every hour or so!! (Its always the middle of the night)

Uplifting series, I think it should get many more people to DoNate.

RTKangaMummy · 25/08/2005 18:43

on in 17 mins

potty1 · 25/08/2005 18:49

A 7 month old on tonight needing a heart transplant. Personally, I'll find this one tough to watch I think.

Hope your dh is doing well Joanie.

Ds1 signed himself up on the register last night. He's 17 today

OP posts:
Stargazer · 25/08/2005 18:57

Both DH and I are already registered donors. And should anything ever happen to our DS or DD - their organs will be donated too.

Personally, I think we should have an opt out system rather than opt in.

potty1 · 25/08/2005 18:58

Me too Stargazer

misdee · 25/08/2005 19:14

still cant watch it. tbh i wouldnmt watch it with the kids awake as i dont want them knowing too many details about organ donation, as am not ready to face the questions (where do they get the heart mummy, is the one i am dreading).

but will watch the casulty/holby thing saturday (which i normally avoid as all the heart donation stories have made me seethe when i have seen them)

Joanie · 26/08/2005 12:23

OOh, you should watch it. They haven't shown any ops in detail (apart from the eye one which is the worst thing for me to see!). We have watched them all avidly, but we have recorded and watched later as kids too young I think. Have you got a DVD? We could send it to you.

I hope it will give you hope, as they all seem to be sucesses and the difference before and after is plain to see.

My DH doing great thanks - he seems yrs younger (probably just a bit old before his time before)

Misdee - haven't had time to catch up & have to go now, but I hope Peter is getting better. You are all going through the mill aren't you. Fingers crossed and at least he is in the best place to deal eith these things.

Got to go, back online in a few days probably.
