used ST's?

I have just bought some for (not used ones, LOL) for DD who is looking more and more like she might start sometime soon, and then I started wondering, do you flush them or throw them in the bin?

(I have only used tampons for so long, I'm not sure if it's OK to flush them!)

OP posts:
posieparker · 16/05/2010 19:58

Don't do STs give her tampons.

snowkitten · 16/05/2010 22:29

Bertie - now there's an idea!

majafa · 17/05/2010 11:02

Sorry might have this wrong as I have boys not girls but I thought my neice was advised NOT to use tampons for at least the 1st year, not sure why tho?

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 11:36

there is no real reason for that, maj

girls can use appropriately-sized tampons from whenever they feel ready to

LadyOfTheFlowers · 17/05/2010 11:49

sorry, but do mothers really retrieve towels from their daughters kickers?
i have this to look forward to?

SlartyBartFast · 17/05/2010 11:58

dd has nappy sacks, brought originally as now deceased dog poo bags.
she doesnt leave them in her knickers.
she often leaves them, in the bag, in her drawer. too embarrassed to put them in the bin

NorkyButNice · 17/05/2010 12:02

Why can't she dispose of them in the same way you dispose of your tampons? Neither towels nor tampons should be flushed.

She'll probably have been told all about what to expect at school and will know more than you

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 12:03

lady...it is not compulsory

if my 14 dd was expecting me to do that, she would have a very big shock

mumeeee · 17/05/2010 12:13

Put them in the bin. Either in the wrapper that comes with them or in a small plastic bag,

posieparker · 17/05/2010 12:35

At ten, when I had my first period, my mother had not really discussed anything with me and so I didn't know what to do. When we talked about it I decided it would be far less embarrassing to use tampons, slender tampax are great. Aside from having babies I have never used STs....eeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwww.

BritFish · 17/05/2010 16:13

um, sorry but that is absolutely VILE that any girl would leave the towel in her pants for her mum to find! no, no, no, no. sorry, noone can say 'well it might not be obvious where to put them...' its obvious enough to take them out of your pants! where does this underwear get left? in a drawer? in a laundry basket?
im not fazed by this stuff, but i am grossed out by the thought of going anywhere near my daughters used products!
oh and you're not supposed to flush tampons either really?
i roll em up in loo paper and whack them in the bin. thought that was obvious? sanitary packs usually have a little diagram on how to dispose of them on the pack anyway IME...

posieparker · 17/05/2010 17:08

Britfish, that's someone's daughter you're talking about.

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 17:39

yes, although it is very icky and my dd knows better and would never do it, that does seem a slight over-reaction on BF's part

BF...do you have ishoos ??

DilysPrice · 17/05/2010 17:45

You can use the plastic wrapper for the new one to wrap up the old one (they usually have little sticky tabs on to hold them closed).
For the last one of the period use loo rolls.
I'd be too worried about TSS to let a young girl use tampons, but then a friend nearly dies from it at school so I'm paranoid.

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 17:47

each to their own, dilys

pointydog · 17/05/2010 17:52

Never flush!

Wrap in toilet tissue then in the bathroom bin

toddlerama · 17/05/2010 18:00

I think the reason girls are advised not to use tampons for the first year is that their flow is likely to be lighter and a too absorbent tampon is much more likely to cause TSS. If she's heavy straight away, there's no added danger.

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 18:41

like I said, toddlerama, the appropriate size/absorbency of tampon is perfectly OK

2shoes · 17/05/2010 18:45

bit late but I use nappy sacks.

BritFish · 18/05/2010 00:37

sorry, was a wee bit of an over reaction, didnt mean to offend anyone.
but still....my mind boggles at where these pants are found? the smell? im fine with my own bodily fluids, not so fantastic with my daughters...
[okay, that sounded wierd, but still]

AnyFucker · 18/05/2010 07:19

I understand, BF

rather than be totally grossed out though, I would more have an issue with the lack of respect for others demonstrated if people leave used ST's around

snowkitten · 19/05/2010 16:43

wish I hadn't mentioned it! she doesn;t habitually do it - just occasionally after a bath or shower. Lord above!!!!

Oh dear-honestly-I once lived with a girl (we also shared a house with guys) who used to leave her dirty knickers on the bathroom floor with the ST stil in it!eeewww eeeww eeewwww-proper boke material!!

I was/am appalled by this and seriously thought she was the only girl ever who would do this!!!!she lived just with her mom and was like 'yeah,my mom would just pick them up when she found them!' wrong wrong wrong! (we were 19 btw)

In no way judging parenting types-each to their own but please, please ensure your daughter knows that you are literally the only person in the world who would want2see this! Really!

Again, not a personal attack at all-just because this girl found it so....normal!and honestly,I could never think of her the same after this!

candyfluff · 31/05/2010 23:06

ive always used st's and have never used tampons ,always wrap them up in toilet roll and into the bin.my dd is only 9 and has seen me do this and knows whats expected of her when its her turn.

i once worked with a girl who was so embarrassed of her monthly's that she would always take every single one of her towels home with her , hate to think of the smell on a hot summer day - barf
