I have tried Sudocream on spots but found it was useless, my pores felt more clogged up than ever. I actually just dab any spots I have with Tea Tree oil, seems to take them right down in a day. Failing that Freederm gel is excellent...cleared up a nasty breakout I had on my back in time for my wedding.

I would suggest avoiding any prescription meds UNLESS it's severe acne...doc gave me this stuff for my back and it ruined all my tops and several towels!

HELPFUL
thanks

Diff perspective...I have 4 teens in various degrees of spottiness, and after several years of using OTC stuff we went to the docs and got prescription meds.. the topical type not oral (my lot are badly spotty not painful acne)
.Yes they bleach the towels and pillows a bit but they also dry up the spots!!

Usually the kids use them for a few days then have a day or two off to undry the skin!

PanyOxyl is a goodOTC cream if you don't want to go to the docs.. dries them up in a couple of days

Hi, for years i myself have suffered with acne. I have tried every OTC remedy you could think of but in the end the doctor prescribed Duac cream and its brilliant.

Just a very small amount is needed. It did dry my skin badly to start but now i just wash my face with a very mild face wash then pat dry , apply Duac , then half an hour after use plenty of Astral cream to moisturise.

I made the mistake of thinking moisturiser would make spots worse when infact after using acne cream your skin needs you to moisturise other wise the skin will produce oil becuase its too dry and make acne worse.

My 15 year old son started to develope spots but now follows my routine and his skin is very clear most of the time.

oops went on a bit there! anyway i hope that helps.

When DS1 started with spots aged 11 I used sudocreme and it kept them under control quite effectively for a long time.
He's now 14 and we had to admit defeat and ask GP for cream. His neck and back were really bad as well as his forehead. The cream is very dehydrating but he uses it once a day and in between used moisteriser on his face. ( I had to buy some suitably macho stuff). The cream warns that it bleaches so is best done at bedtime. His bedding has bleached patches but not his clothes.
It works up to a point. He's 14 and has to be reminded constantly to apply the cream.I'm not going down the route of oral medication if I can help it though.

Just re read my post and meant to say the prescription is for brevoxyl not sudocreme.
Sudocreme was not enough for full on acne.

Bodyshop teatree cleanser and related stuff is ace and dries up ds's zits quickly.

MARYZ yes my gp was happy to prescipe Duac. Your poor ds, i know exactly how he is feeling. Clearasil never helped me so get down the docs and suggest Duac. It may not work for your son but it might be great for him like it was for me.

Like i said before my 15 yr old uses my cream also the odd time and its really cleared his skin. AScne really is a horrible condition but for teenagers really does effect their confidence.

Remember that washing face with flannel before Duac then moisterising an hour or so after is important. goodluck

My 11yr old was prescribed Duac and Tetralysal tablets. She has full on acne on her chest and back, which she is fed up about because of all the dancing she does - she was putting tops over her leotards.GP very supportive, suggesting treatments that only need to be applied/taken once a day.

inthesticks · 08/04/2010 17:39

Maryz, everything I read said that it was a myth that sun cleared up acne. Last summer over a fortnight in Portugal DS's skin cleared up beautifully in spite of lathering high factor cream on. The only area left with spots was his hairline because he flatly refused to slick his hair back and let the sun get to his forehead.
I think duac has the same active ingrediant as brevoxyl. I think you can buy it at a pharmacy, it comes in different strengths.
