DD (16)sits her GCSEs this summer, then wants to go to Exeter College to do A levels in Graphics, Texttiles & Business Studies. I went to the open day & was impressed.

However, her Arts teacher in school wants her to stay on to 6th form & says there's abig drop-out rate at Exeter & they have a bad reputation & their results are crapola. Any advice?

She wants to end up as some sort of Designer.

Two of my nephews went to Exeter College and my niece is there at the momnt. She is in her 2nd year and is taking textiles,English and Photography. They all really like the college and my niece is staying on to do the Arts foundation Course. My sister has been impressed with it and I haven't heard of there bieng a big drop out rate.

Thanks mumeee - So she's doing her A levels and then staying on? What does the Arts foundation course involve - is it a preparation for Uni? Does your sister think that the Arts facilities are good? And that teh teachingis good?

I do wonder if the teacher had a motive - they seem to want them to stay on at school. Perhaps it's a funding thing .

I believe Exeter college has an excellent achievement rate for A levels - should tell you on their website and yes, schools want students like your DD to stay on and achieve for their results to look good.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Yes I think the Arts foundation course can be used as a preparation for uni, But it also gives her a lot of differnt optoins to consider. A bit like finding whats the best next step for her.
Also Exeter College are good at getting extra help for those who need it.

A friend of mine teaches Art at Exeter College, and she's excellent!

I have no experience of Exeter college although everything I have heard about it is good.
In my experience, teachers always push for A-levels at the post 16 centre that is affiliated to the school they are teaching at.

I got in early with ds3 and informed the school he will not be doing A-levels with them and he is only year 10.

I'm hoping that DD1 will go there to do the IB which I hear is well staffed and resourced. I have heard mixed reports of A levels, but generally feel that a 6tgh form college is a better environment than school for the well-motivated older teen (ie not my son, who needs encouraging every step of the way...)
