DD(Yr 7, just turned 12) has just started her periods. She is well prepared, theoretically, ie she knows what they are, what it will look like, what she needs to do etc... but has still been a bit shocked by the reality. She has a set of pads, spare pants, and bag should she need to change underwear in her school bag. She knows how to put pads on and take them off; anything else from your experience which you would share?

Would also like to know when your DD first started to use tampons (i am from generation where I was told I couldn't use them til I was married - but bought some out of desperation on a school trip at 14!)think DD is too young at 12 but am prepared to be told otherwise as she is very sporty and tampons would be helpful. Thanks!

she has said she doesn't want to try tampons yet - tho given her sporty activities, agree they would be best bet. Think I'll put a pack in her drawer, so they are there, and (as she does know already), make sure she knows we can discuss any of it any time. Just a tad worried that it is now 7 weeks since last period

Periods are entirely random when they first start. Mine didn't settle for years. Think your idea of puuting pack of tampons in her drawer is a good one although interested as to why she doesn't want to try them yet? I suppose 12 is very young to have to start worrying about that sort of thing.

thanks missmoopy. i think it's a big deal at 12 just getting used to the idea of periods, without the thought of "putting something inside you" - which we all know easier and more convenient, but totally alien to them at that age. At least I don't tell her she can't use tampons til she's married, which is what my Mum said to me (like that happened!!!)

12 does seem awfully young, bless her

I don't know what possesed me but I went straight to Boots and bought LilLets when my first period came, aged 12. Perhaps I had a money off coupon from Jackie or something. I didn't use pads until after I had ds, and those were giant maternity ones.

Do Tampax and so on still do free samples and booklets for young girls?
