Don't teenagers feel the cold?

I've recently noticed the teenagers going to our local high school don't wear coats or hats or scarves, etc.

A few of them wear jumpers under their blazer, but many of them don't. And I bet almost anything they are not wearing vests under thier shirts.

So why don't they wear coats? Is it because their blazers are too bulky to wear a coat over the top, or are coats totally uncool, or do teenagers just not feel the cold? (TBH I don't remember ever feeling cold as a teenager, butI'm pretty sure I wore a coat to school)

What's this about then?

Dd1 says, on asking, "Cos I don't wanna"

Closer grilling reveals that a)there are no lockers at school, b)if you take a coat you need a massive bag, which is heavy and uncool, and c)nobody else wears coats.

Rustybear is spot on when she says that it is only ever cold for a teenager if you ask them to go outside

ADifferentMe · 13/01/2010 22:03

I have to admit the only time in my life I ever fainted was on a student demo in a blizzard - I wasn't wearing a coat

stressheaderic · 13/01/2010 22:10

Luckily, nice sparkly matching woolly hat/scarf/gloves combos seem to be the in thing at the school where I work...coats still a no-no though, blazers seem to be enough.

The rules have been relaxed this week, and as much as I hate Ugg boots, they are still a must-have item for our teenage girls, so at least their feet are toasty.

poshsinglemum · 13/01/2010 22:18

Since becoming a mum my coat obsession has blossomed.

Before dd is was handbags and shoes. Now it is coats.

I am old and uncool. Coats are for wusses you see.

MangoMama · 13/01/2010 22:31

I bet you won't see any boys freezing in the cold without their coats... this just shows how we women sacrifice ourserves to look good, from very early age. I feel sorry for them, those kids must have a lot of wrong ideas and low self esteem. But hopefully they'll grow out of it (if they survive the winter, that is).

(Sorry about my English BTW)

stealthsquiggle · 13/01/2010 22:31

My obsession is comfy shoes and snuggy jumpers .

DH bought me Cardy Uggs for Christmas - and then it started snowing - but fortunately DH the DCs bought me the snuggiest posh wellies (shooting boots) a couple of years ago. If only I didn't have to go to work my feet would be permanently warm and comfy.

stealthsquiggle · 13/01/2010 22:32

MangoMama - when our local comp closed due to snow all the DC getting off the bus in the village were in blazers and nothing else - boys and girls alike.

MommyUpNorth · 13/01/2010 22:46

Not just teenagers... ds (7) comes out of school every day in just his polo shirt! He always says he's too hot, and that's that. He will wear his (spring) coat to school, but always puts it in his bag to come out.

pointydig · 13/01/2010 22:47

at school, they up sticks and wander about from room to room all day and only have a small locker to put stuff in, if they are lucky.

Coats get in the way. Coats are for wimps.

I would not want to carry a winter coat around all day, as well as a bag full of folders and jotters and books. No way.

Patch66 · 13/01/2010 22:59

Same around here, boys and girls go to school only in blazers, some wih hats, scarves, gloves. It's just what's cool at the moment and not having anywhere to put coats at school is a good excuse.

When I was at secondary school in the 80's we didn't have blazers but we did wear coats to school. We didn't have anywhere to put them and had to carry coats and bags around all day.

Older kids used to go out in the evening in winter in just t-shirts and short skirts.

cloelia · 13/01/2010 23:11

this is so much my problem I cannot believe it. Know what? I think the problem is schools which have blazers as part of the uniform. why not get rid of the blazer/tie combo, it is absurd on kids, and replace with sweater and fleece. would cost NO more. DD 1 has had a half mile walk to bus and refused to wear anything other than blazer and scarf. Finally after much ranting from me one day this week she agreed to take a coat ... picked MY musto sleeveless gilet. Huh. Also wears ballet pumps for the walks. did infact wear her new Uggs one day this week ... On the day they could wear mufti instead of uniform she wore ... strappy with a smock top over. No sweater. cheap cardigan on top. Am nearly giving up. PS only 13 ...

I just asked DS(15) and he said he just doesn't do coats (never has done!). We've given up buying them as he says he likes it in the shop but never wears it, waste of money! He did wear a black mack over a few layers the other week when he went out in the snow with his mates and said it was handy for keeping him waterproof in the snow. But he won't take it to school, apparently not being able to put it anywhere or carrying it around is an issue. However, he always wears a hat, indoors and outdoors, the woolen ones with the plaits seem to be the rage, he has all different colours of them and loves them, go figure!!??

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 14/01/2010 01:24

erm - tis not just teenagers. The only coat i owe is a rain coat that was bought for taking ds out for walks in the rain when we were in a caravan the summer it did nothing but rain. Havent really worn it since. ANd other then that i havent worn a coat since i was 10. I dont feel the cold, except in my hands so am often found in a top/t-shirt (although currently wearing a jumper outside at mo) and gloves. Tend to have more sensible shoes as feel the cold in my feet. Some people just dont feel the cold.

Ability to feel the cold, i believe, is affected by hormones so it could the be surge in hormones contributing to this in the majority of teens.

solo · 14/01/2010 02:32

It's worse when they are walking down the street with there bellies hanging out...my Mum always told me I'd get 'cold in my kidneys' if I didn't wear a vest. I expect to be saying exactly the same with my Dc's, although Ds seems to like wearing a vest in cold weather.

solo · 14/01/2010 02:32

their bellies!!!

ArcticFox · 14/01/2010 05:21

They just don't feel it. I spent all my teenage years coatless

Used to play netball/hockey in a games skirt and aertex shirt all through winter- never wore my sports jumper (mum gave up buying me one after the first two years of senior school).

Mind you, even in my twenties I used to wear jeans and a short jumper (midrif flasher)and no coat in January.

I don't think teenagers stay cold deliberately- I just dont think they feel that cold. Must be their hormones...........

borderslass · 14/01/2010 08:29

mine does she loves hats always wears a coat but they don't have blazers and school has relaxed rules on wellies usually they have to change into shoes or get a uniform slip but not at the moment, but we do get bloody cold winters however I saw some lads on Monday wearing canvas pumps we still have about a foot of snow FFS.

piscesmoon · 14/01/2010 08:38

I gave up worrying-if they get cold they get cold! A shirt and thin blazer in the snow is madness to me! I can't understand not wearing a waterproof in the rain either.

PurpleLostPrincess · 14/01/2010 09:44

Thing is, we warn DS that he will end up with a cold, and when it happens we have to put up with him sniffling and sneezing and feeling sorry for himself and he ends up having time off school. That's when it gets serious to us...

BrigitBigKnickers · 14/01/2010 10:39

I was called to collect my DD from school early the other day.

She has a bad cold (although not really bad enough to have kept her off school)and had a really bad head and a sore throat.

SHe had walked to school in the snow that morning...

No coat and wearing plimsolls! (her take on her school are allowing pupils to wear uggs/ boots/ alternative foot wear in the snow)

I was very as I had had to leave work early.

Stupid girl.

PrammyMammy · 14/01/2010 14:32

I have a grown up friend who doesn't wear coats.. to show off her clothes, mad. Even on new year (remember how freezing it was?) she looked at me in shock and said "you're wearing a coat" She thought i was the crazy one.
I remember i couldn't find a coat to wear over my blazer, we had lockers and could change though. I also remember my nan always telling me off for no scarf and me thinking she was just old.

nappyaddict · 14/01/2010 14:47

I bet in some schools coats hung up on pegs outside classrooms would get pinched though, so that's not even an alternative if there's no room for lockers.

I do think they should be allowed to wear hoodies under blazers and wellies instead of shoes though in this weather.
