ds is very nearly 12. he has hada laptop since last birthday. he is very dyslexic, and needed it type homework.

It was 2nd-hand, reconditioned off ebay.

I check history often he mostly uses it to type homework and to use spotify (music) and youtube.

pointydogg · 25/11/2009 17:17

no, but we plan to get a laptop when dd turns 14 and is working towards exams. SOmetimes we all fight for the pooter.

Milliways · 25/11/2009 17:37

DH has worked in the COmputer World for years so we have always had spare computers (demo models etc) lying around, so my 2 have have their own laptops. DS got his whilst at Primary school and it gets upgraded from DH's cast-offs.

DD got her own "brand new" fully specced model for her 18th as she was off to Uni and needed a really good one.

I think from about 14/15 they have coursework to do and really benefit from their own machine.

brimfull · 25/11/2009 19:42

admylin-I think you'll find that most kids need access to a computer in senior school , grammar or not

We have a PC downstairs and I bought DD a laptop for her 15th birthday. It's downstairs too, on constantly by the sofa, she has priority over it but I grab in when she puts in down.

DS is 14 and uses my old Laptop but it is very very old and he doesn't get it connected to internet

For Christmas we have bought him a new one BUT I will install windows 7 on it which has automatic timers on/off and we don't have wireless {switched on} at home so it will only connect with an ethernet cable which means he will have to sit in the sitting room with us

He doesn't have a TV in his room but as we have 5 TVs in this house he can watch in another room if I am watching the mega one as I have priorty over which channels are watched in this house

Although we quite often are watching same stuff ~ apart from the endless editions of Top Gear on DAVE ~ which he loves.

halfcut · 25/11/2009 21:39

Yes he has a computer in his room and a laptop and a tv and a playstation ..

halfcut · 25/11/2009 21:40

oh and hes 17

snorkie · 25/11/2009 23:18

ds got himself a laptop from freecycle. He had to unlock the BIOS by soldering up some loopback mechanism for the parallel port to get it working. 'Working' is perhaps an optimistic description of its capabilities - it's so ancient with next to no memory, that it's only useful for stripping down & experimenting with. He's 15 and generally monopolises the family desktop (which also doubles as the TV) in the living room.

Geronimooooo · 29/08/2016 00:10

eldest (12) had a laptop since he was 11 years old and has a tv in his room

QueenofQuirkiness · 29/08/2016 09:54

Dd15 has her own laptop in her room, DD12 and DS12 share the family computer downstairs, no laptops until they start GCSEs

JC23 · 29/08/2016 09:58

My 10 year old has his own laptop. We don't have a family computer/laptop though since ours broke. I have a work one.

bigTillyMint · 29/08/2016 11:44

Both DD and DS got a laptop the Christmas of Y10 (so 14+) for use in their bedrooms/wherever. Prior to that they used the home PC downstairs.

Mummydummy · 29/08/2016 16:29

My 16 and 14 year olds each have their own. It was too difficult to share because of homework clashes - both needing to work on major projects at the same time (particularly on Sundays) and I often need to use mine to work at the same time too. This became especially pronounced with GCSE's. 14 year old does not use his in his bedroom though (mainly cos theres no wifi in there).

Ragwort · 29/08/2016 16:39

No - we share a family desk top & DH has a lap top for work.

DS (15) says he uses the desk top for homework but seems to be only used for Facebook/You Tube or copying and pasting homework Hmm.

He has plenty of savings so if he really wanted a lap top he could buy his own.

NeonPinkNails · 29/08/2016 16:45

DD14 has a Mac Mini but only because it's my old one. Before that she had a pretty basic laptop. She uses it for homework but also watching endless YouTube!

It is in her room but there are parental controls on our router - by this age I figure if she's going to look at dodgy stuff she'll find one way or another but we do what we can to prevent it. Computer has to be switched off at 9 as well as I don't like her on it before bed.

pontificationcentral · 29/08/2016 16:48

Yep, they all do 16,14,12.
Ironically, the youngest was the first one to get one as she has been keyboarding since yr1 due to her disability. They are expected to have a laptop for school here from y9 I think.
Either way, the girls use theirs v constructively. Boy child doesn't give two hoots, never does any homework anyway, and hasn't touched his since it was bought, except to to order Magic cards online. It languishes in dust in the dining room whilst he uses his iPad and phone to play games and watch YouTube in his bedroom. We actually now use it as a sort of family desktop if we can't quite do what we need to from our laptops.

chaplin1409 · 29/08/2016 16:52

My eldest 2 have computers in their rooms both were given them by their grandad when he up graded. They also have tv's and mobile phones and are fab teenagers. They know right and wrong what they can and can't do so hopefully will be ok. They never hide what they are up to on them.

dancinghulagirl · 29/08/2016 16:53

we all have our own pcs in this house, youngest dc got his first pc about aged 8yrs? - we have a joke that we could set up a call centre - we used to be big on PC gaming here -

they are all in the same room, and only now oldest ds uses his school chromebook in his room - there are no tvs in their rooms (there is one in DH and my bedroom which they can use)

bruffin · 29/08/2016 16:54

ZOMBIE THREAD
I answered this when ds was 14 he will be 21 2 weeks tomortowSmile

pontificationcentral · 29/08/2016 18:23

Ah fuckit. How did Geronimooooooo dredge up a seven yo thread? FGS.

weegiemum · 29/08/2016 18:37

We have profligate technology in our house!

DD1 (16) has her own laptop and uses it anywhere.

Ds has a desktop (mainly for gaming) in his room. A TV and a monitor for double screen gaming. PS4.

Dd2 (12) has a laptop. TV in her room with a WiiU (which tbd is often downstairs for very loud mariokart!)

Dh and I both also have laptops .

We even talk to each other sometimes!!

NicknameUsed · 29/08/2016 18:38

I would think an 18 year old not having one is quite unusual, yes. OH works from home and needs his computer all the time. I use my laptop a lot and DD uses hers for schoolwork, social media, YouTube etc and general surfing. She is 16 BTW.
