My DD hasn't really done enough I don't think, has just done a bit here and there this holiday, without a proper plan, despite me telling her to make one and stick to it.

I am so glad i have a break between 2nd and 3rd DCs. I cannot bear the 'revision' stage. Its just nag, nag the whole time. DS1 did hardly any revision for GCSEs and 'underperformed' for his highly academic school. Still passed them but not with the string of As etc. But it did make him work for his A levels so served a purpose in some way I suppose.

But you can't FORCE them to revise. They have to want to do it themselves to a certain extent.

Agree with Custardo about the evil influence of made up qualifications!

can't tell you how relieved i feel reading last lot of posts. Phew
have found nagging HOPELESS and I feel like my mum which I swore i would never be. Thanks all for the reassurance...

My DS is doing GCSEs, did 2 maths papers over Easter (only cos they were set by school as homework). Otherwise NOTHING and very little this week. I sway between "it's his life, let him get on with it" and "but he's bright and I know he'll regret it later if he doesn't do well". Glad to know I'm not the only one suffering

optimisticmumma · 23/04/2009 09:10

Know what you mean ladette!Much better now he's back at school - can step aside and let school do the nagging...?

LaineyW · 23/04/2009 15:08

DD1 is doing a couple of hours a day, broken down into two one-hour sessions.

She gets in from school, flops down and has an hour's break with something to eat and drink then does about 4.30 to 5.30 then has another break for dinner and 'chillin' then gets back to it at about 7.30, 8ish. That seems to be working quite well so far. We drew up a timetable together, wrote in all the extra school revision sessions (their school is brilliant for that, there are stacks of after-school sessions and even some breakfast sessions for last-minute cramming on the morning of some of the actual exams)and are now filling in the available hour slots with those subjects she's not so confident in.

I think revision is a real skill and not something which many teens find easy to tackle so it has to be broken up into small chunks or it seems completely overwhelming.

The revision guides are good in so far as they list the general subject headings so you can list what should be covered.

Sorry for long post...am beginning to feel like a revision anorak.

that's very impressive LaineyW

LaineyW · 24/04/2009 15:42

Thanks ladette, I was just feeling quite chuffed with how it's all going when she messed up the whole system by watching Surf's Up on DVD last night instead of revising, then having to cram some horrid science stuff in at about 10pm...d'oh!

I have one DS doing A2s and one doing GCSEs. Neither of them seem to be doing any revision at all. They both say they are doing revision sessions at school. I agree with Riven but am in awe of parents who have the power to MAKE their children revise. Our elder son needs good grades AAB to get to Uni (all his offers were all similar) but that does not seem to panic him at all. He seems confident he will do this and, after all, it is him that will suffer if he doesn't make the grade. I suspect there will be a lot of all nighters going on nearer the tiem. At the moment the only all nighters that go on are when he goes clubbing.
