The Sam Stern books aren't bad, although they'd be better minus the pictures of his mother all over them (who obviosuly wrote them).

Or a student cook book maybe?

Welcome btw!

obviously

Not much practical use, but very very funny

On a more practical note...

Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food book - has got lots of tasty recipes which do not cost much.

Grub on a Grant - I still use one or two recipes from that book 18 years on. Dead useful, starts with boiled eggs and toast, sandwiches etc; goes on to an easy 3 course dinner for someone you want to romance!

Nigel Slater's Real Fast Food.

I sent DS off to university with Beyond Baked Beans. There's usually a short first aid leaflet in a first aid box/bag. Budgeting - I still need to know about that myself, but the banks do often have useful leaflets for young account holders.

Thanks for that. I'll try Beyond baked Beans!

From Beyond Baked Beans I got onto Amazon and ordered How to Boil an Egg and The University Survival Guide so thanks for starting me off in the right direction.

Grub on a Grant - I still use mine from 1989!

This looks pretty good as well, even if he isn't at uni

Many years ago I sent my little brother off to Uni with a copy of "Real Men Don't Cook Quiche" by Scott Redman . It's no longer in print, but you can still pick up a second-hand copy on Amazon.

Very tongue-in-cheek with lots of good basic step-by-step recipes with the expressed aim of impressing the Laydeez. It also lists all the housework jobs that "real" men don't do, like ironing shirts, hoovering, loo-cleaning etc and then explains exactly how to do them properly (just in case they get lucky, natch!)

Most amusing in a 70's retro way, but also enormously practical. My brother learned to cook and keep house using this book and is a now a middle-aged gourmet foodie SAHD!
