Teenagers

What do your teens eat when they get in from school?

My two DDs are 16 and 13. They get in from school and are generally ravenous (lunch is at 12.35 and they don't have anything mid-afternoon).

What I really want is lots of lovely healthy snack ideas and recipes to keep them away from the blasted crisp tin and biscuit barrel...

soup and bread, or cake and ice cream, some times both, and they have a proper meal about seven.

DS has lunch at school 1.30-2.30 (!!) so not hungry early but DD is starving when gets home and if she snacks then she won't eat meal later - typical!

I compromise depending on activities. Generally try and feed them early after they've had some tv downtime and then they can get on with homework boosted up by food.

DH gets back late so we eat late (too late for me). Occasionally dep on activities we have several sittings! Casserole or something that can keep warm. Hassle though - I prefer everyone to sit down together and we do at weekends.

Cereal usually. DD (14) likes "Apple Sunshine" - which is just sliced apple around the edge of a teaplate and a pile of grated cheese in the middle. Macaroni cheese. DS (11) likes packets of noodles, meatballs & goblin puddings.

Endless hot chocolates and tropicana orange.
No matter how big the dinner , within an hour they will both be after a snack. Neither can pass the fridge without checking inside it.

I make sack loads of flapjacks - I use the Delia Smith recipe but have halved the fat and sugar and upped the oats so (hopefully) they are not too unhealthy and (also hopefully) they should be a slow-release carb. I worked on the recipe to help DH when training for a marathon. After polishing off half a tray DS, usually has cereals, fruit and then supper and then later when DH comes in a second supper!(DH is veggie but we are not, so that is actually 2 separate suppers DS consumes) He is also like a stick!

constatlycooking- which flapjack recipeof Delia's do you use? I have been using the one from frugal food which is delicious but has frightening amounts of butter and sugar. I've tried various ones of hers and they are too crispy. DD loves a soft chewy flapjack which I can't seem to achieve, they go too crumbly and don't stick together. I want a soft, sort of healthy one.
