How does one stop over reacting to teenage moods?

My son (20) so not officially a teenager anymore seems to manage to rub me up the wrong way all the time. Came home from Uni in December bright, happy and polite but the moods set in on New Year, he is sullen , difficult and when he does talk it is just to moan. I know I should ignore him as he is probably anxious about going back to uni shortly and worrying about the work and exams. Once he is back I rarely hear from him unless there is a problem but I am used to that now !
Has anyone been through this and have some tips to offer - they will be greatfuly received.

I think its time to go back to university! My 20yr old DS the same. Am afraid I can't offer any advice. I think it may be to do with having to behave reasonably 'nicely' to friends at university so it is bit of a relief to be vile when at home (I hope).

My DS doesn't contact us anywhere near as much as DD at university for a chat or whatever, but was in contact pretty quickly when had flu and came home to be 'looked after'

It is normal I think. Mine has exams as soon as he gets back, and I know he is quite anxious about them. He is pleasant enough, but not particularly interested in interacting with his family. It is hard to let them go isn't it.

I think they return to us emotionally once they have children of their own, but this stage is a time of separating, and learning to live independently.

I think they are ready to leave us before we are ready to be left IYSWIM.
