Why don't teenagers wear coats to school?

its freezing cold, it's been raining yet both of mine insist they do not need coats for school. they just trot off in uniforms complete with blazer and a scarf around their necks. Now they are getting colds regularly and i'm sure its because they refuse to take a coat! They said that there is nowhere to put them in school and they are to bulky to carry around all day! My youngest is nearly blue when he gets in from school, so any suggestions on how to keep him a bit warmer without wearing a coat would be appreciated TIA>

we get a lot of stoorms round here quite a problem

SlartyBartFast · 26/11/2008 22:56

why can't they have pegs?
cos stuff would be stolen?

ridiculous.
in my day. etc., etc.,

my dc have lockers but no time to go to them, between lessons or after school, lessons and buses would be missed.

My 11 yr old will wear his coat(s) to school then leave them in his locker. He says it's depends where the last lesson is because he can't be bothered to go back to his locker.

No coats for tomorrow morning now

My DD who is 14 doesn't wear a coat to School because I have refused to buy her a new coat this year. She had a brand new one at the end of Winter 2005 (so almost new for 2006) A nice Next coat cost over £50. She thinks I am being unreasonable, I think she is - stale mate! My arguement is - it still fits, I still see people wearing coats like hers, its waterproof (well a decent showerproof!), its warm, she liked it when we bought it for her - against our will I must add!

Have told her, if she wants a new coat then she can buy her own with Xmas money - much to her disgust! Otherwise, I have told her to wait until next winter! In her eyes I am such a bad Mother! In my eyes, she can be stubborn but hopefully the cold and wet will get the better of her and she will wait!(fingers crossed!)

Tortington · 26/11/2008 23:15

seriously you bought her a coat in 05 and you think she is being unreasonable? i get it you can't buy food or pay the rent, but if its really cos it still fits her, i think your being very mum like - not in a good way.

my dd now wear a coat its too cold

my ds wears a hoodie.

pinkbubble, she shoudl learn from my ds who has accidentally on purpose perhaps lost his coat,
well it was a bit too small and had lost its warmth.
after 2 or more weeks of no coat spent an agonisign saturday buying him one, looking at all the shops in town where none at all were right.
in the end found a great one, only 16.00 - even better.

Custardo, I can see what you are saying, but honestly there is nothing wrong with coat, she is even looking at similar style coats. Why should I fork out another £50 plus for her to get bored of it.

I have backed down on lots of things that I really don't agree with so she can keep face with peer pressure. ie shoes, bags, make up,certain types of trousers, hair the list could go on.

Also to be honest, the amount of time in the last couple of yrs she has actually worn the darn thing, its not in bad condition.

I am told the answer is 'because'.

I send ds out in a fleece with a cagoule in case it tips down. Have just invested in a (whisper) Boden jacket that ds considers acceptable; that has been worn into school, and made it home in one bit. Success...mind you it has been bloody freezing and snowing in Brussels this week, so that could be why he's worn it.

Polgara2 · 27/11/2008 15:37

Oh I know - frustrating isn't it! I spent ages looking for a black, waterproof(ish) coat with warm inner bit, that was light enough to fold up/carry! Managed to find one and dd1 does go out in it in the morning but very rarely has it on when she comes home. Think its just too much effort to stop and put it on when she comes out because when she gets to me at the primary school next door where I am picking dd2 up, if its cold or raining she puts it on then while we wait having already got cold or wet!

piscesmoon · 27/11/2008 15:49

I have given up worrying about it! I don't mind the cold, but it seems utterly ridiculous to go out in the rain with no coat and be soaked for the day. I pass whole groups at the bus stop and it seems the norm to be coatless!

MrsTucky · 27/11/2008 20:43

Pink Bubble, I like your way of doing it. We parent's have to win sometimes.
15yr son has worn his jacket for the last 2 years, but think it's cos he can 'handle' himself now, when he gets called uncool etc..plus his jacket is a good one, can't remember the name now.

14yr son, and 12 yr daughter won't wear coats at all even though they chose them. So I think it's cos of the stick the kids get at school for wearing coats

wonderstuff · 27/11/2008 20:52

We have shiny new lockers and still very few coats, some arrive without blazers too. What is funny that although outside they don't feel the cold, inside they get huffy when told to take scarfs off
Our PE teacher is still coming in shorts and tshirt, also no coat, so maybe its just me that feels the cold.

roisin · 27/11/2008 20:54

At ds1's school about 50% of students wear coats. It's a uniform coat and is not bulky, but is good quality and is waterproof and windproof.

At his induction day a member of SMT told the new students that only about half the school wear the coat ... the intelligent half

I think that encouraged ds1, but with a walk-waitatbusstop-busjourney-walk trip both ways each day, I can't imagine him not taking his. He doesn't like being cold or wet.
