Help please to think of a new hobby for a teen and her mum

My 15 year old dd is so snowed under with studying, and suffers from depression from time to time. I'd like to think of some kind of hobby she and I could do together, something totally absorbing and relaxing for her to enjoy, both to chill out and to create some kind of special time just for her and me. Preferably I would like this to involve our going out somewhere together at least part of the time.

It can't be anything too sporty as I have an injury. We both love crafts. I'd prefer to steer away from anything that seems too scholarly as she has enough of that at the moment. Any suggestions would be very very welcome.

Yes I really love scrapbooking I go to a couple of crops a month. There are a couple of good magazines around that I could give you details of. Where abouts are you? I could look up a group for you.

anorak · 03/03/2005 12:48

I'm in W Herts, between Watford and St Albans.

I will have a look for you. Did you look around the rest of that site there is lots of info to get you started on scrapbooking. have a look here

anorak · 03/03/2005 13:01

I had a quick look and will look more extensively later. I'd be interested in the magazines.

Pottery? I did a course with my little DD (age 4, then) and DS then 11 ,but there were teenagers with mums there too

Stitch and bitch and singing - my recommendations. Really relaxing for a stressed teen and both things she might not be confident enough to try solo?

anorak · 03/03/2005 13:05

I can't see her doing the amateur dramatics or singing - that's dd2's style! But the more crafty things or possibly yoga are all in the frame. She doesn't know I'm plotting this so I've yet to run it by her.

AuntyQuated · 03/03/2005 15:07

morningmayhem - i could do with some pointers too.
i have bought my muma scrapbbok and some bits to get her going for mothers' day plus a voucher to go to a class...but will look at the sites you have pointed out.
which mag would you recommend as there are quite a few out there?

sorry anorak...have butted in to your thraed!

dinosaur · 03/03/2005 15:09

anorak what a marvellous mother you are!

Wish me and my mum had done something together - other than sitting at the kitchen table drinking endless cups of tea and bitching about my dad!

anorak · 03/03/2005 16:06

Why thank you dinosaur! It's just that she tends towards depression sometimes and the weight of studying for GCSEs is beginning to make her seem so strained at the moment. I want to create a hobby for her that can take her mind off it and be something she looks forward to.

AQ - I think it's been well established recently that threads don't belong to anyone particular

Massage? Quite a few adult education places run courses and you could practice on each other and dh.

Blu · 03/03/2005 16:26

Hair braiding and extensions etc?

anorak · 03/03/2005 17:48

Some of these ideas are so good, yet I know I would never have thought of them.

I am taking her to see a film tonight and take the opportunity to run some of these past her.

Thank you all - any more ideas very welcome.

aromatherapy course?

HunkerMunker · 03/03/2005 17:54

How about cooking with her? Or is that totally lame for a 15-year-old?! Or can she cook?

Do you have one of those pottery painting shops near you? Our local one is 'Brush and Bisqu'it' (sp?) Dd(12) and I treat ourselves to a session occasionally. Even tho we are both useless at painting the results are very pleasing and we get to natter while we paint. Very therapeutic.

Thank you all. Well we went to see 'Spanglish' last night which seemed to relax her and I had a chance to tell her about my evil plan . She liked the hair braiding idea best of all (Thanks blu). I think she realises that she could fleece all her friends with a skill like that! So I'll be looking for a local class. Fortunately both of us and DD2 have long hair we can call practise on.

I'm really interested in the scrapbooking for myself, morningmayhem so I'd love you to let me know abou those magazines please.

Thank you all so much for your input, I certainly would never have thought of half the things you came up with!

Can anyone help? We've been hunting around for hair braiding classes but can't find anything. We live in W Herts. Anyone know where we can learn this skill?

Oh yes and morningmayhem, can you tell me more about the scrapbooking mags, ie what they're called and where you can buy them?

thanks everyone.
