What do you think about teenagers having TVs in their rooms?

DS is 13 and although he hasn't said anything directly, he's been hinting that he wants a tv in his room.

I asked dh what he thought and he thinks it's a bad idea, as he can't be trusted to switch it off at a sensible time, and also it's quite nice for all three of us to watch tv together (we only watch TV 3 nights a week normally and it's only recorded films or series which we all like). DH also thinks ds will game a lot more if he has a tv in his room.

Do your teenagers have their own TVs, and if so are there any problems?

we don't have this problem yet DS's are little, but when I was a teenager M&D had a little TV in the kitchen, if we wanted to watch something else we could sit in there (or Mum would whilst washing up)

as for DAVE DH thought all his christmasses had come at once when he found DAvE!

Ds(15) has one he uses it mainly for gaming tho..I have no problem with him having a tv in his room.

Nigellapleasecomedinewithme · 11/07/2008 14:42

Have a TV room for the DCs - time has to be negotiated though between beebies, PS time and TV.

As for DS wathcing Gok - more nudity pre 9pm than any other show!!! Learning to love the female form in all its guises

ds has had one for years(he is 16) and dd has one she is 13 and has sn.

AbbeyA · 11/07/2008 19:13

No-I think they are a bad thing at any age.

aGalChangedHerName · 11/07/2008 19:17

My ds1 had one from about the age of 14/15 and spent equal amounts of time with us as a family. He is nearly 17 and has just bought himself a 42" LCD tv for his room with his hard earned cash from his part time job. He works hard at his job and school so i have no objection tbh.

aGalChangedHerName · 11/07/2008 19:19

He also has a laptop too that he paid for himself. He spends prob more time downstairs with us than he does in his room.

janeite · 11/07/2008 19:21

I really don't like the idea of TVs in bedrooms at all, whether for adults or children. However, I suppose after age 16 they are big enough to make their own minds up/pay for it! For school-age children I think that they should be an absolute no-no.

Amphibimum · 11/07/2008 19:24

i dont think tellys in rooms are a good idea. esp for teenagers who often have problems reaching out/communicating anyway... far too easy to retreat into own world and lose touch with you.

aGalChangedHerName · 11/07/2008 19:26

Not all teens have comunication problems tho do they? My ds's are both pretty sociable and we spend lots of time as a family so i don't mind that they want to have time away from DH and i (as well as 2 little sisters)in their own rooms with tv or reading or gaming.

Everything in moderation imo.

Amphibimum · 11/07/2008 19:28

fair enough. i am a big believer in treating people as individuals and not generalising, so if it aint a problem, then go right ahead! my eldest is 5, w2hat do i know??

MumRum · 11/07/2008 19:31

My DC are 10 and 11, they both have tv's in their rooms, but obey the rule off by 8:30 and 9:00pm.....
we also have a tv in our bedroom that I wouldn't be with out...

"cheapest little one in John Lewis is £250"... Argos have a little 14" one for 49.99

AbbeyA · 11/07/2008 19:56

I think it is far better to read. I wouldn't dream of having a TV in the bedroom as an adult and certainly not as a child.

southeastastra · 11/07/2008 20:43

you think, not all teenagers like reading

southeastastra · 11/07/2008 20:43

some prefer looking at pictures

random · 11/07/2008 20:44

We have a tv in living room our bedroom and ds has one in his room... We are evidently a very unsociable family

random · 11/07/2008 20:45

Gin my Ds certainly likes to look at pictures

random · 11/07/2008 20:45

[vodka] even lol

2shoes · 11/07/2008 21:26

ds loves reading and he is 16.
but he loves his tv too

Elasticwoman · 11/07/2008 21:30

Absolute no-no in our house. Dh and I don't have tv in our room either.

Milliways · 11/07/2008 21:32

Mine both have TVs. DS has had his since he was about 7, but it was put there mainly for the Playstation as his room is almost 20' long and doubles as a playroom. It is also downstairs so we can hear if it is on. He is always good about asking what he can watch.

Both mine prefer Radio 1/General music blaring whilst doing homework etc.

Lilymaid · 12/07/2008 16:25

DS2 has a TV in his room, but knows that when he needs to work that he needs to have that and MSN etc switched off - it took him a long time to realise that though!
DS1 revised whilst TV blared, computer game playing, MSN going continually and when not playing computer game he would be doing DJ practice. He got very good results, but when doing his finals at university (when he was worried he might mess up) he sat in the library 12 hours a day fortified by a thermos of black coffee. He got the result he wanted.

lazymumofteenagesons · 12/07/2008 16:38

My sons do not have tvs in their rooms. We kitted out one living room for them with tv etc. But where do I always find them watching - on OUR Tv in OUR living room. I think it might be to do with this TV being bigger and better and connected to a SKY box.

Mine were very disgruntled-at school they found that just about everyone had TVs in their bedroom and DVD players. I am another one, amicissima,-NEVER under my roof.
