17 year old car insurance

Hi
Just after any advice on newly passed 17 year old teenage driver. As his parent I have a 1.3 Yaris, so not a big or powerful car!
I tried to get him on my own car insurance but my current insurer doesn't insure anyone under 21.
I tried Marmalade and they wouldn't insure him (didn't say why).
Using Confused / U-switch is giving options of about £3500, (with a black box - which as I will share the car, I'm not so keen on, but maybe will have to accept it), which seems expensive but I'm new to this teenage driver thing!

Any idea of the best way to insure him?

It is really worth tinkering with the quote parameters. Add parents as named drivers, park off street, and also delay the policy starting for 2+ weeks - that made a surprisingly large difference (hundreds).

The things you can't change though are age and postcode. Starting at 17 makes it very expensive.

We were fortunate that DD didn't take her test until 18, then doing the things listed above, plus a black box, she got insurance on a 1.2 Hyundai for £560 with Hastings Direct. Also bought it through TopCashback which gives £45 cashback if you buy the policy through their link.
