How can I help my 13-year-old speak to me respectfully?

Hello, I find myself posting on here again, I don't even think I'm a great mom anymore. My 13 year old son is swearing at me all the time, calling me a f-ing b-word. How do you get your teenager son to respect you? even just a little?

Pull him up on it every time. Refuse to respond until he speaks to you respectfully. Are you with his father/does he see his father regularly? If so, get him to reinforce the message.

Stop doing anything for him until he treats you with respect.

he’s old enough to cook for himself, do his own washing, travel where he wants to go independently etc.

He wants to act like that you won’t stop him as you can’t gag him! But you can make it clear you aren’t accepting it.

Probably by going back in history a few years

because a 13 year old calling his mother a f b would indicate that he’s been horribly disrespectful to you for some time

Are there other adults in his life?

begonefoulclutter · 09/04/2026 15:39

He's learned it from elsewhere, probably from his father or other adult male in his life who also treats women in a despicable and disrespectful fashion.

Is this new behaviour?

No, sadly his father passed away when he was 5
