Dropping Economics to focus on Maths, Further Maths and Computer Science A levels - to hopefully do Comp Science at Uni

DC17 is doing Economics, Computer Science, Maths and Further Maths at 6th form.
He wants to drop Economics (he absolutely hates it) and carry on with the others, resulting in him leaving college with 3 A Levels - Comp Science, Maths and Further Maths.
Will this limit him in any way in terms of Uni requirements? He wants to read Comp Science at Uni, which I understand is quite a popular course.

We don't think it's a good idea but we are of the school of thought that 3 different subjects shows more of a range. But of course we know jack shit, according to him.
I should add, he thinks he might be able to get better marks in those 3 and he is heading for a C in Economics if he's lucky, and therefore he can concentrate on achieving As in the remaining if he drops Economics.
(He will talk to his tutor as well obvs).

Sorry no advice but following as DS wants to do further maths as a third a level and doesn’t have a fourth choice. From what I’ve read I think some schools/colleges make them do four with further maths as some children find further maths difficult and want to drop it. I think for CS they would be far more interested in FM than economics and it shouldn’t impact him. There are a few unis/ courses which don’t count FM as a proper third a level I think but I assume it would be in the syllabuses if that was the case

It's fine. Further maths is a perfectly acceptable third A level subject, especially when applying for a maths-adjacent subject like computer science.

He’s being very sensible.

Fiddlesticksand · 19/03/2026 00:05

Perfectly reasonable. Computer science is very competitive so he’ll need the As.

Ohthatsabitshit · 19/03/2026 00:21

I think he’s being sensible if he’s absolutely sure he wants to do computer science.

For some of the STEM subjects more depth and breadth in maths can be more valuable than having another subject.

Thank you for the advice, it has put my mind at rest.

My DS is doing Maths, FM and Physics. Three A levels including FM is reasonably common at his school. Have a look at the CS and maths degrees at the good unis if you want reassurance. Most of them value FM more than a spurious fourth subject.

Maths and Further maths are actually more important for Computer science than Computer science! Oxbridge Imperial and Warwick require Further Maths for CS. Other top unis don't have it as a necessity but it really helps both the application and then when they are.in the course. All unis offer on 3 A levels. Only Imperial and Bath will offer on 4 if they are doing 4. But maths, FM and CS are a great combination for a CS application. Much better than maths, economics and CS. Further Maths is king in CS!
