DD15 Going Grey

Hi there,

Wondered if anyone has experienced this - my DD15 is starting to go grey. It's mainly visible at the back of her head (she has short hair). It's not genetic I don't think - myself and DH didn't go grey early. She is autistic and finds lots of situations stressful - could this be the cause? I've also read that various deficiencies could cause early greying - this is my main concern really. DD15 isn't bothered by the greys and neither are we (DH and I are happily grey), but obviously if it's caused by a deficiency we need to get on top of it.

Thanks!

It might be genetic anyway - a rogue gene or mutation. If you're worried about deficiencies, you could seek a private blood test (I doubt the NHS would do one for this).

If she's not bothered, I'd not worry too much. My DB went grey at 15, which was a surprise to us all.

Ah okay! That's interesting if it might be a rogue gene anyway. She seems to be fine - happily growing like a weed in the sun! - so nothing on the surface suggests deficiencies. That's good to know about our DB - thank you.

I think I would see a dr, just in case its hormone related or something

Go to gp. Could be poi. Need checked

My dd started going grey at 16. Her dad's brother went grey very early too, so must be genetic in our case.

Probably worth checking but I work in high schools and have seen quite a few kids going grey. I always notice it when I’m invigilating exams because their heads are down and the lights are bright. In fact a few months ago I covered a year 8 class which was tiny and only had 7 kids in it and three of them had grey hairs coming in at the root. I think it’s more common than you think.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause premature greying. GP would be able to test for this.

Many thanks all. I think I might get her checked out just in case.

Vitiligo can cause grey/ whitening of the hair. Have you noticed any small patches of loss of pigmentation to the skin?

Interesting. No I haven't - skin seems to be fine. She hasn't started her period yet, but I haven't been too worried as I was very late starting.

This!
There are links to the mthfr gene and autism so would make sense to take methylated vitamins.

Thank you! Good to know. I'll definitely get her checked out.

Yes! My DD is 15 and last year started getting grey hairs its awful as she has really dark hair so really noticeable, shes not ok with it, took her to Docs had bloods checked she was low in vit d so has been on high strength vit d since but the greys are getting more and more Doc said nothing causes it other than maybe stress 😩

Mathsbabe · 15/03/2026 22:41

Mine started with grey hair very young, 8 or 9 I think. She’s 28 now and is about 50% grey now. Her B12 is fine, her thyroid is underactive so has blood tests.
