Period knickers

Hope this is the right place to post apologies if not.

I'm going to buy some period underwear for my daughter in preparation for her starting her periods.
I've never used them and am wondering, how many do you need? They say the same absopancy as either 4/6/8 tampons depending on the level of protection so do you only change them once a day, twice a day?
How quickly do they dry after washing, I'm assuming they can't go in the tumble drier?

Any advice welcome, thanks

I found 4 to be the right amount for me. One on then changed for overnight. Wake up and new pair. Then pairs one and two can be washed and dried. Rinse and repeat (pardon the pun) Any fewer than that, I was running out too quickly.

I can’t quite wrap my head around them. My DD has a very heavy flow, and even if they could contain the fluid, how uncomfortable would they be? Do they smell? I mean I can’t imagine wearing the same pair all day.
So I got her a halfway type. These are leakproof that you wear in addition to tampons or pads. She has told me the pants have saved her on many occasions, and will wear them when she’s expecting her period too - she’s out all day. I wish they were around in my day!

Yes I can't quite get it either but wanted to get some to try them as obviously they are more sustainable long term.
I guess they must work otherwise people wouldn't use them?!

Thank you, that's helpful. I was thinking many more, so am I right in assuming that you only change them once a day?

My DD (15) has been using them for the last few years and loves them. She has about 8 pairs, I don't think she'd manage too well with less than that. She has quite a heavy flow and has a few sensory issues and she prefers the pants so much more than pads (she won't consider tampons at all) I keep a lidded bucket in the bathroom and I rinse them out and keep in the bucket (in cold water) until ready to throw in the wash (it's not recommended to use fabric softener with them). They can't be tumble dried so can take a while to fully dry. We have a dehumidifier for drying clothes indoors and I'd be lost without it. We started with 5 pairs from Cheeky Pants which weren't cheap but they are very good quality, still going strong 3 years later. I've also added a few pairs from M&S which are also good. Just make sure you buy the correct absorbency. I wish I'd had them when I was a teenager!

I don’t think 4 is enough personally. I need to change once a day plus night for heavy flow (and more often if very heavy). They can also take a while to dry. I have modibodi.

WatchingWong · 25/02/2026 15:24

I have six pairs. I use two pairs a day so that gives me enough time to wash and dry between uses.

No they don’t smell. They have some kind of anti-odour core that stops them from smelling, and mine are just cheap ones from M&S. never had any problems with them at all.

User415373 · 25/02/2026 15:30

I also have 6. I have very heavy flow for 2 days where I use 2 pairs during the day, one at night. Then it's one for the day and one at night.
I wash with everything else and dry on the radiators. I love the M&S ones.
I'm in my 30s and have been using them for about 5 years now, I'll never go back!
I also find them fantastic for bladder security on a night out or running/exercise etc (still working on that after kids)!

FancyCatSlave · 25/02/2026 16:46

I like having lots because I can’t always wash and dry fast enough, so I have about 12 pairs of different flows. But 4 is fine if you are on top
of it.

Best to not buy too many with someone that will grow and also might not like them. I change once or twice a day. Peri flooding days I prefer to change every 8ish hours but when it is lighter then just change morning and night so 2 pairs in 24hrs.

They feel dry to wear unless you get any massive clots, no smell. Just make sure to rinse properly before washing.

They really are brilliant if you get a good fit and the right absorbency. I used cloth nappies and wipes so felt very natural to progress to these.

BalletSki · 27/02/2026 13:56

Both my DD and I use them. We each have around 10 pairs. (different absorbancies and fits - boxer shorts are great extra security at night time, Granny pants for day 2, etc) You're not supposed to tumble dry them, but we do in the winter. They haven't reduced in their absorbency. They might end up falling apart sooner, but I've had some pairs for years which are still going strong. We do avoid fabric conditioner.

On day 2, I need to change around mid afternoon. If it's not convenient l to do that, you can wear a pad in the morning and remove it. (reusable pads with wings also exist). The rest of my period, one pair lasts me all day. And one pair for night. They don't smell. They don't leak. You feel dry in them. We do a load of darks washing every day. They go straight in there with everything else. No need for soaking or extra steps.

AshHeart · 27/02/2026 14:01

I bought reusable pads with wings from Amazon. They wash great and are brilliant. Wish they'd been around when I was younger.

Couldn’t you ask her what she’d prefer to wear, pants, pads or tampons?

When I started periods I was given pads but swiftly moved to tampons as I preferred them.

I’ve worn them for years as does dd. They’re amazing. Never had a leak. I’d say both our flows are pretty standard. I put new pair on in morning then a new pair after my night shower. Quick rinse then into normal laundry.
