Dd is 16 years old (year 11) and going to a NYE party. She would like to take 2 cans of cider. Do you let your teen?

My 14yo is having 2 beers tonight, he’s at home with us and we are having a small party. So yes.

blankcanvas3 · 31/12/2025 16:16

Yes, DS17 was allowed to take beer to parties at 16

ChronicallyMum · 31/12/2025 16:17

At 16 I was taking bottles of vodka and bags of weed to parties on a random Tuesday so 2 cans of cider at a NYE party is impressively pathetic. Is your DD trying to ease you into the idea that she drinks or are you extremely controlling?

Also, I’d let her.

Anewuser · 31/12/2025 16:19

Legally, she shouldn’t be drinking with those her age.

However, quite a few of us were living away from home at 16 so drinking every weekend. Still alive over forty years later, without liver problems.

So, yes, let her have her two cans of cider.

Dd is just 16 and is taking a couple of cocktail cans. As a op said I was doing waaay worse dar younger so it’s fine by me

youalright · 31/12/2025 16:24

Absolutely shes 16 she's fine. If you say no she will do it anyway but be to scared to call you if she needs help.

mumonthehill · 31/12/2025 16:24

Let her take them. Make sure she has a safe way to get home. Make sure you can pick her up earlier if anything happens. Have a bowl ready just in case when she gets home! Someone will be bringing harder drink than she has.

How old are your kids?

At 14 my parents drove me to the pub every Friday night where the bar staff served me booze and looked the other way while I snogged a series of inappropriate adult men. Parents and adults generally are more careful with children these days.

However, yes I would let her take the cans.

I Always laugh at the cool mums who don't think their child has lived until they've tried to escape from a wardrobe after a bad trip or had their stomachs pumped.
A couple of cans is acceptable @Socrossrightnow. I don't think it hurts to be cautious. Hopefully there will be adults overseeing.

Yes, I allow DC1 of the same age to take a couple of cans to a party. My slightly younger DC is still pretty excited by alcohol so I precede with caution.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 31/12/2025 18:06

I’d let her, my 14yr old is having a couple cans Smirnoff ice or blue wkd tonight if he would like them with his friends. Party is now at our house so I’m being relegated upstairs whilst the teens take over. Parents all know I’m home and that there is alcohol here tonight but I can’t see if getting messy as im driving them home later.

DD had plenty of friends who did exactly this. I’ll give you a spoiler alert - none of them have turned out to be the successful ones! It’s a bit cringeworthy that a grown adult feels the need to boast in this way.

A couple of cans of beer/cider or alcopops are fine and perfectly appropriate OP. You don’t need to feel bad for not actively allowing your child to drink a dangerous amount of spirits or dabble with drugs at 16…
