Not enough places with school for DofE Gold

So my son has completed his Bronze and Silver DofE with his school, with his friends, and is really looking forward to doing his Gold expedition with his friends as they had a great time on the others and really bonded.

For Bronze, there was a ballot as there were too many students wanting to do it. Luckily he got in. Then there were too many to do Silver so we all paid a bit more and some of them had their expedition managed by an external company.

Now it's time for the Gold and we've just had the letter which says that there are likely to be too many of them so there will be a ballot again to select the cohort. I'm actually feeling a bit surprised by this as I thought having successfully done the Bronze and Silver with this school, then at worst they would do outsourcing to help resources again but it's a flat yes/no.

I'm not feeling overly 'lucky' at the moment and just feel like this is yet another letdown of life, and it hasn't even happened yet. My other son hasn't got onto Bronze although all his friends did and that was pretty awful for him, he was really upset. I think my DS will take this really hard if his friends go and he can't. I know he can do it on his own with a private company but it just isn't what he was excited about (and he doesn't get excited about much) and he's really shy so I think just doing the residential on his own will be enough of a challenge.

I'm probably massively overreacting as it hasn't happened yet, but I can't help but think this would be just our luck. Do other schools do it? I'm not aware of anyone being turned away from an activity like this from other schools (and to think we moved house for this school!).

Can he just do DoE Direct?

What about doing it through Scouts? I know some Scout groups do DofE.
It seems a shame for young people who want to do DofE not to get the opportunity.

He would have to be 18. On reading the DofE website, if he doesn't do it with the school or another group he can't do it at all until 18. Seems very unfair.

He used to be in the Scouts locally but didn't go on to Explorers. There is a small Explorers group locally but there's a long waiting list (for all the scouting levels) unfortunately.

My eldest did DofE through the local air cadets. It does depend on if the group does it up to gold level or not obviously but maybe check with local cadets groups? As well as the forces ones I don’t know if the police cadets would do it as well but at least worth asking I think. Good luck anyway!

Look for an open DofE group near you. These groups are not based within another organisation eg schools or scouts, but are open to all. My DD did this due to timings clashes with the school group, but actually preferred it!

I think you can with parental consent and if you sign up with a licensed provider? Maybe only 16 onwards, but it's not entirely clear. Anything near you?

Thank you for that! I have googled it and there is one in my county, which I'd actually never heard of. I don't think he'll be delighted if he can't do it with his friends but I feel relieved to have found a plan B.

Fingers crossed it works out for him. And it could end up with him making some new friends, which can only be a bonus.

Mydadsbirthday · 20/11/2025 22:23

Oh that is a shame OP. Is it a funding issue - if so could you offer to pay at all?

Qualityroses · 20/11/2025 22:30

The week long residential must be done with people they don't know anyway so he won't be with friends.

RavenPie · 20/11/2025 22:35

It’s a shame but only the expedition that he would have been with his friends, and they can go camping anytime they want.

This, we sent DD on a random residential to Wales. She loved it, she also did it through collage and didn't really know the people she was doing it with, they all had a great time.
