Anyone think im being unreasonable?

My son is going to be taking his test in the next couple of days. I have asked him not to take passengers in the car when he passes but he thinks im being unreasonable. He will be having a black box and got a dash cam.

If my parents told me this when I past my test I would have ignored them.

So not ready for this 😫

Look up rules in Australia.
They have things like only one young passenger.
I think restrictions for first 3 months are not unreasonable.
Whose car is it?

I think it depends on the dc and who bought the car/pays the insurance. Dd has her test this week but she’s very sensible. Doesn’t stop me worrying. Do I think a rule of no passengers is reasonable, no. Of course she’s going to want to pick up her girlfriend and it would be odd to make girlfriend walk while dd drives by.

Dd will have a fob thing (like a black box) and the rule to share her location on WhatsApp.

If you are paying the insurance I think you get some say.
Try to negotiate a compromise until the spring.

ShesTheAlbatross · 09/11/2025 19:39

If you’re paying to insure the car you can make rules about how it’s used I think

The first thing most new drivers want to do is show off and take their friends out so this will be difficult to enforce!

Is he sensible, observant or will he take stupid risks to try to impress others? Inexperience makes him more vulnerable either way and a worry to us as parents.

Get him advanced training, show him YouTube videos and remind him how dangerous it can be. It’s horrible but black box will help.

I think my own dd is the least of my concerns, it’s her friends I worry about. They’re actually a great group but I think it’s natural to worry. I do think I’d worry more with a boy. That said, she has a Ford Ka 1.2 engine so won’t be going super speedy.

We have just told DC that they are not to get in a car with anyone (regardless of how lovely and sensible they are) until 3 months after the driver has passed their test. A blanket rule because it’s hard to say we think Friend A is sensible but we've never met Friend B. Cue lots of huffing but tough. Obviously we can’t physically stop them but we can show our displeasure if we find out……we have explained the reasons why.
