If so, what do you put it down to? I'm just wondering whether being raised slathered in suncream and sun protection, the constant drinking of water, the loss of decent junk food and the trend for 'skincare' from primary school age has made a noticeable difference to this generation from ours.

No, my DD has acne yet I only had those big spots that had gone before I left school.

Shangrilalala · 28/09/2025 14:49

No, a bit surprised as I (luckily) had great skin and was never plagued with any spots. All mine suffer and we spend a fortune on potions etc trying to help. DD is 23 and still suffering.

LasVegass · 28/09/2025 15:04

Difficult to say as they were all on lymecycline for various lengths of time. They also spend time morning and night on their faces, I’m sure much more than I did.

herbalteabag · 28/09/2025 15:09

No, mine was better, my kids have had more outbreaks than I ever had and I didn't suffer much at all. My sister's was also worse than mine.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/09/2025 15:43

I’ve got twins. One is like me very good skin and I did piss all for my skin apart from sitting in the sun with no sunscreen (not recommended), the other
one has skin like their father had which was Really bad.

Crushed23 · 28/09/2025 16:52

I don’t have kids, but the 21 year-old grads where I work have noticeably better, more glowing skin than we did at their age ~15 years ago.

Just to add, they put it down to Korean skin care and little/no alcohol.

tinyspiny · 28/09/2025 17:04

My kids are now adult but they both had worse skin than myself and both used roaccutane to deal with it , they inherited the bad skin gene from my husband .

Funnywonder · 28/09/2025 17:16

My skin wasn’t too bad. A few spots in the t zone area at any given time during my teens. DS1 has loads of spots all over his face. We were at the GP about an unrelated issue and the doctor commented on DS’s acne and prescribed antibiotics and a bunch of other medications etc. But DS wouldn’t use them. He doesn’t seem too bothered about his spotty skin. At least he doesn’t poke and squeeze his spots like I did with mine though😆

BreadInCaptivity · 28/09/2025 17:23

Yes, thankfully no acne for either of us, but both suffer from eczema.

DS’s skin much, much better than mine at the same age (and through childhood) as I had a lifetime of experience in knowing how to avoid triggers, ongoing care to prevent flare ups and how to treat when they happen.

souter · 28/09/2025 17:23

DS’s skin is much better than mine when I was a teen. His diet is far superior- I was raised on highly processed food and don’t think I ever drank water. DS has quite a few dietary restrictions and is a fussy eater which means he almost has no junk / UPFs and he has a good skin care regime. He does get the occasional spot, but isn’t plagued by them like his dad and I were.

ApricotCheesecake · 28/09/2025 17:40

I have three teenagers. I'd say two of them have better skin than I did and one has worse.

Butterflybum · 28/09/2025 17:48

Mine have their father’s skin. I never really had acne.
DDs is definitely linked to diet. She’s an adult so not much that I can do.

NoTouch · 28/09/2025 17:50

Myself and dh never had more than the odd teenager pimple so it was a bit of a shock when ds developed full blown severe acne in the space of 6 months when he was 17. His face, neck and upper torso, every inch was covered in it.

6 months of roaccutane sorted him out (we did privately as nhs waiting list was long) and now at 22 he just gets the odd spot here and there, probably aggravated by poor shaving technique.

Ivyy · 07/10/2025 14:47

Poor dd inherited the acne gene from me and dh, we both had acne, body as well as face. Both my parents had acne, dh’s mum had acne, so I was pretty sure dd would get it too. Nearly 3 years of trying everything from the GP, referred to dermatology and she’s now on Dianette, if that doesn’t work the only other option is Accutane unfortunately. Trust me I feel very guilty, pretty sure I’ve given her PCOS too

Decisionsdecisions1 · 07/10/2025 17:36

Yes dds is much better. I was riddled with eczema- my parents had no clue and my GP no interest. I had to educate myself and seek treatment as an adult.

By contrast dds eczema was treated properly from age 3, including a referral to a hospital dermatology unit and is much better controlled as a result.
I’m able to educate her on triggers, moisturising, avoiding strongly perfumed products etc.
She understands the benefits of short periods of stronger steroid creams on flare ups before they escalate etc, as advised by the dermatologist.

Like many teens she loves skin products but with some research we’ve found gentler ones that don’t trigger a reaction (and handily have enough of a social media following to be considered on trend….).

I wouldn’t say her diet is good though her meals at home are healthy.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 07/10/2025 17:44

My Dcs skin is loads better but their diet is not. Both have food issues relating to SEN. I was brought up with amazing home cooked food from scratch.

But, They have both inherited the beautiful olive complexion their dad has. He has often said in puzzlement that he never had pimples when young. he's 20 years older than me, and I had shocking acne. I still do in my 50s.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 07/10/2025 17:46

Oh and also- my parents did not give a shit about acne. Thought it was a rite of passage and told me not to be so vain. I still have scars and was bullied horribly. I promised myself that if my Dcs had issues I would take them to a dermatologist, no questions asked.

I still have a hard time trying to allow myself to consider my own aesthetic health.

Skybluepinky · 07/10/2025 19:19

No far worse than mine, but better that them having scales like their dad.

Nottodaty · 07/10/2025 19:22

I had rubbish skin, huge hormonal spots and to be honest even late 40’s I still get the odd friend.

My eldest suffered from acne but localised to her forehead, but now in her only 20’s just the odd one. My youngest has really suffered, and seemingly no amount of potions and lotions has helped and now has scarring.
